Vivian Campbell To Reunite Original Dio Band

Guitarist Vivian Campbell has decided to start jamming and performing again with the other living original members of Dio.

Vivian Campbell To Reunite Original Dio Band

In addition to his work with famous bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, renowned singer Ronnie James Dio also fronted and founded the successful heavy metal group Dio. While the vocalist unfortunately passed away due to cancer almost two years ago, the band Dio's original guitarist, Vivian Campbell, plans to reunite with the other original members. "I met up with the original Dio band guys, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell again last night," Campbell posted on his Facebook page. "Now that I've brushed-up on how to play those solos again, we're planning to jam some more and plan to do some gig's, too. We found a great singer who can really do justice to Ronnie's parts." The singer that will be performing in Dio's stead will be Andy Freeman, who has worked with artists such as The Offspring and Lynch Mob. According to Classic Rock Magazine, bassist Jimmy Bain said: "We've had a couple of rehearsals and it sounds great. Listening to Vivian playing those songs again has been amazing. He's just so into doing this and his enthusiasm has rubbed off on the rest of us." "Our aim is to do some shows around November, concentrating on the first two albums. It's gonna be great getting back onstage with these guys for the first time in so long." It's interesting to see Campbell so enthusiastic about playing old Dio material, especially after he was quoted a few years back saying: "[Playing in Dio] never mattered to me and still doesn't. He's an incredible talent, but he's an awful businessman and way more importantly, one of the vilest people in the industry." Are you looking forward to the remaining Dio band members reuniting to play some shows, or do you think that it would be wrong to reform the band without the original legendary frontman and founder?

I just wonder what they're gonna call it? To have a band called "Dio" without Dio in it sounds kinda shaky to me.

Of course it's sad Dio can't be with them, but they are keeping his legacy alive. Even if Campbell is only in for the money, i'd still go, drink a beer and pay tribute to the greatest singer of all time. And i believe Dio would want his songs to be sung not left alone and forgotten.

Unless it is for the Ronnie James Dio cancer fund I don't like this. Vivian not only didn't show respect to Ronnie, but to quote Wendy Dio "always said that he hated all the albums that he played on with Ronnie, and that was very hurtful to Ronnie. Very hurtful. Would you like someone who said something like that about your albums? " I can't decide in that context whether this is a cash grab or a change of taste for Vivian, but I don't think that someone who has spent more than 25 years spitting on Ronnie should be able to profit from him after he has died. Not sure what to say about the other guys in the band though.

Nononono. Dio without Dio is like a cheeseburger without cheese, its so far from the same.

Perhaps he regrets never coming clean with Ronnie and feels like he should do something like this in order to deal with it? Perhaps it's just a cash grab. Does it matter? Whoever's playing some Dio in a club near me, i'm gonna go and sing along.

Well, it's not like they utilize him. I have no idea what your guitar skills are like, but I'm confident when I say that you could adequately do Vivian Campbell's job in Def Leppard. No matter what his reasons are, I think it will be good to hear him not wasting his talent, like he usually does.

DIO HATED VIVIAN!!! THIS IS GARBAGE!! VIVIAN SHOULD LEAVE IT ALONE AND STOP TRYING TO COMPENSATE ON DIO NOW THAT HES GONE!! DIOS WIFE SHOULD PUT A STOP TO THIS!!

Really surprised to hear this. Especially after I heard Ronnie himself say a few years ago "F*** Vivian, he's a F***** a**hole, I hope he dies." We miss you Ronnie.

BAD NEWS..I remember Ronnie hated this guy..Campbell disrespected Ronnie when Ronnie's alive. I wish Ronnie is here to tell this F***A***** TO F***OFF. I respect Ronnie and what he believed and said. "Somebody stop Campbell"

This is true, Vivian is a totally ****ing queef and has no place trying to worm himself back into Dio's music and success. FUCK Vivian Campbell. Hail Dio.

Gah, hard one. Sure, Dio has a legacy and all. But don't do DIO without DIO. Do a tribute concert instead TO Dio.
    Spekulus
Dio was quoted saying Campbell was only in it for the money in the 80s. If anyone needs a tribute to dio stick to dio disciples. Saw them at donington and they did an amazing job and it clearly wasn't for the money. That or get shepards pie guy

"Vivian Campbell To Reunite Original Dio Band" I think I can spot a flaw in this plan...

A band called Dio without Dio is like Fat Free Bacon...A horrible lie!

Lande's tribute album was killer, he could really pull it off.

Same with Appice and Bain, none of them would be doing this if it wouldn't financially benefit their careers.
Except for this man repeatedly spit on Dio and bashed him publicly. He many times stated he would never perform with Dio again, and not until Dio died, did Campbell see the opportunity to make cash of his death. Do you see the conflict of interest here?

The first couple DIO albums were awesome, but Vivian Campbell is a total prick. Him and Dio were not friends at all. Campbell didn't even say anything when Dio died.

I am confident that Dio will bring plagues upon Vivian for this, just like he did to that pharoah a while back.
    Attercop
I thought they despised each other. There's a video of Dio going off on a fan who asked about Vivian, look it up.

Like most people in any kind of relationship, when bad things are done and said and one moves on, it hits home. You feel like shit. Belive me, with the first two releases of Dio there was a relationship between all these guys. These are masterpieces. So whether good or bad, to go out and pay tribute to Ronnie is awsome. You can be sure there will be a bunch of other artists spotlighted here. Lets face it, Ronnie wrote the bulk of this material, but it was not completed witout the guys here and they had there input as well. This is Vivian's finest moment in playing guitar, make no mistake. I have followed him ever since. Riverdogs, Shadow King, Def Leppard (which he basically rides the coat tails on) and his solo blues effort. There are others as well and let me clarify myself on the Def Leppard bit. He has been onboard, for so long, for good reason. In any case, let it happen. Cant wait. Would be nice to see Russell Allen step up to the mic for a one or two.

To make this decent they need either a) a hologram (a la Tupac) or b) a Ouija board.

It irritates me how they snuck that "I hate Dio" part in at the very end of the article. That seems really cheap on UG's part, but, above all, screw Vivian Campbell. I don't like his Def Leppard stuff, and he has no right to get Dio back together without Dio. There has to be a million other former Dio guitarists willing to do this. WHY THIS GUY?!!! He better only be doing charity shows for Ronnie's cancer funds, or crap is gonna go down. I rant too much, and I bid you adeau.
    rmp0012002
They never truly hated each other but Vivian was pissed because Ronnie never gave credit to him for the music he wrote. Ronnie always took the credit.
    Anjohl
I had no idea there was tension between Viv and Dio. Those two albums are by far the best in the catalogue, along with Magica.
    Dude475
They better rename the band because it can't be Dio without ****ing Dio. Andy freeman sucks ass

He is to reunite with the old members from Dio. It does not mean they will be calling themselves Dio. It sounds like it is all in the works, too. Vinnie Appice is commited to his new project Kill Devil Hill. He was asked to get back with Black Sabbath for there new run and he turned it down, thats how commited he is. Most likely will be some kind of tribute offering.

too late, douchebag. Dio's gone, and as spectacular as his playing was on the first two albums, It is only so much without Dio's actual voice in the background. This guy doesn't need money, hes been in Shit Lepard for years now. Maybe he feels guilty about how everything went with Ronnie? Either way its too late and anything less than Dio is simply trite.

Also, just read about a reunion of Pantera with Zak Wylde playing guitar. They are both in the same ballpark. It all is gonna get pretty touchy.

It's really nice to hear from Vivian Campbell again and I'm glad he wants to start playing Dio's music again. But I know why he's starting to come forward now, he and Ronnie didn't get along very well for awhile. After he joined Def Leppard, there was a rather abrupt dispute between them. I don't blame Vivian, Ronnie was an amazing musician, and it's just sad to leave that music in the dust. Holy Diver, Last in Line, Dream Evil, those are all classic heavy metal albums. The music lives on forever. At least someone can come close to Ronnie's voice and then find their own identity.

You should check the article out at Blabbermouth.net If the info is for real you will understand where Vivian was coming from. Dio was one of my favorites. I saw Vivian with Dio back in the day and Vivians guitar work was mesmorizing. Would love to see the rest of the original members together again. Vivian isn't doing it for the money. He made a lot in Def Lepord.

And another thought. I highly doubt Dio's wife if going to let the name Dio get used in any way, shape or form for this.

"We found a great singer who can really do justice to Ronnie's parts." " Read this, thought Ripper Owens seeing as how he seems to be the Mr. Replacement Singer Of The Century and got ready to scream and cry hysterically. Never heard of Andy Freeman, but...ummm...like Maiden95 said, I'm pretty sure Ronnie hated Viv, I sure hope they don't use the Dio name. Love Ronnie and Viv though, if this Freeman guy's any good it might be worth seeing!
    MechaDio
I don't care if it's a cash grab or not, I'd love to see them live. It wouldn't be the same without Dio, obviously, but still. That line-up was killer.
