Volbeat Avoid Album Work

Rob Caggiano doesn't want songwriting to get in the way of live performance.

Volbeat are trying not to get too creative on new music – in case it distracts them from delivering the best live shows possible, says guitarist Rob Caggiano.

The former Anthrax man joined Michael Poulson's band last year after being invited to produce fifth album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, then enjoying the experience so much that he signed up full-time.

They're currently concentrating on supporting that release on the road – and Caggiano says they don't want anything to get in their way.

He tells TeamRock Radio: "We've started bits and pieces during soundchecks, but we've not really started work yet. I guess at the end of the year we might start looking really seriously into doing some new stuff."

In the meantime, the focus remains fully on playing live, including a return to Britain following today's Download show. "The final thing with this album cycle is the UK tour," he says. "Right after that we're going to take a bit of a break, gather our thought – then, I guess, get into creative mode."

Not a big fan, but they put on a really good live show. Sound better live than they do on album, imo.

I really don't get what people see in these guys...

I can only speak for myself, but I find these guys refreshingly different. I like that the majority of their music is fun aswell. Plus they mix damn near every style of music that I like into one

They sound so close to their album live that it makes you appreciate their music more.

If they sound like on the albums live I really don't want to see them live :/ I don't know, maybe it's got to do with the fact that I loathe the whole rockabilly culture, mainly because here in Sweden it's linked to inbred retards... I know that shouldn't affect my analysis of their music, but I think it does... So basically I'm biased I guess.

Everyones entitled to their opinion sir. I like the fact that you gave yours, without necessarily "dissing" fans of Volbeat, or dissing Volbeat. We're all different, and we should all be allowed to like whatever we want without HATING other types of music

I'm not really a fan, but they do have some really good music. I guess that's what people see.

Then you didn't see them on their first and second album tour in front of maybe 150 people. The air was just electric. Everybody knew that it wouldn't be long before these kind of small club gigs would be a thing of the past. I'm happy to have experienced it. I think they're very, very good.

I liked them for a while, in the beginning i thoght Pool of Booze was pretty cool, but i got so tired of his singing style and i'm not too big a fan of their style of riffs. But to be honest, the early stuff is so overplayed around here that i never bothered to check any of the new songs, they might have improved over time, or not.

i think what gets radio play is some of their worst stuff. The songs they do that are just power chord strumming are pretty boring, but I like the more metal-y stuff they do, like this:

At least this song has some more aggressive parts, even metal-ish, but I can't deal with the vocals and the whole country/rockabilly feeling :/

Guitar Gangsters was really good, but for some reason they decided to go full mainstream with Outlaw Gentlemen and that marked their end for me.

I feel ya. I've tried several times to get into their stuff, but I get bored to death every time I try to listen to them.

Their music is catchy. Their singer is unique. It's nothing spectacular but it's simple IMO. Simple sometimes is for the best.

Amen. Just the most generic music ever. I think Ghost took their hipster cred away too.

They should consider both - no albums and no live shows. They were such a great band once, but their last two albums were just terrible pop metal and since Caggiano joined them, I really hate seeing them live. Caggiano is all like ,, Look at me, look at me, I'm such a badass!!!'' Don't like that.

In my opinion these guys are awful, the lyrics are just atrocious.

The singer I honestly think is horrendously bad but I like the guitars.

He has probably one of the most unique voices in modern rock, and ya know, can actually sing
    millarso
Unique? Not really. To me, he sounds like most hard rock guys with the addition of a bit of a Danish accent. I'm not saying he is bad by any means, but I don't see what makes him much different than most except for a few oddly pronounced words.
    derpdragon
I wouldn't call him horrendous, but I get what you mean. I just don't like the tone his singing has. Hes by no means bad at it, just not for me. And I kinda wish they didn't try to act like a metal band, they're modern pop rock at best. they do put on a good show though, I saw them at the MMRBQ in PA about 2 months ago.

Sounds like these guys are going to be like metallica: no albums all tour. Not cool, guys!

Well they are succeding at not being creative on their last two albums Jokes aside, they do make a great show live, but I can't get into their music.

These guys are a blast live. Never listened to them before I saw them but enjoyed the hell out of it.
