Jani Lane, the former singer with hair metal band Warrant, has been found dead. He was 47.

Lane's body was found yesterday (August 11) in a Comfort Inn motel room in the Woodland Hills area of California, near Los Angeles. No cause of death has yet been established.

He fronted the band until 2004 then appeared on the US reality show "Celebrity Fit Club", rejoining the band in 2008 but leaving again only months later.

Warrant's best known hit with Lane on board was 1990's "Cherry Pie" which shot to notoriety, not least because of its saucy video.

Since leaving Warrant, Lane had been arrested twice for drink driving and had also spent time in jail, reports Billboard.

Lane was born in Ohio on February 1, 1964 as John Kennedy Oswald. He changed his name in 1983 before moving to Los Angeles to start a band.

He was married three times and is survived by a wife and four children.

Thanks for the report to NME.com.

Didn't like the band or the song, but he died way to young, and had wife and four kids...just awful. Rest now sir, I hope you find a sweet cherry pie in the sky.

I was his waiter once, he was truly a nice guy. I also saw him last october in mesa arizona where he sang for great white while their singer jack something, was sick and he was great! back in the day, Warrent videos was fun to watch while I tried to nail the neighbor's daughter. lane was more than just a singer in some hair band, he represented an era that was fun, and I for one feel like a small part of my youth went with him to keep him company. I will miss you brother

And? Does that mean that everyone on the planet who doesn't sell records isn't allowed to have an opinion on the guy? It's probably the most over used and nonsensical argument when defending a musician. This guy made it big with his writing, very big. Does that mean there isn't someone recording tracks in their basement and playing at local bars with more talent? No. It means this guy was discovered.
It doesn't mean yuo can't have an opinion, you just don't have to be heartless man. There is no debate about his success; nobody would know whether he lived or died if he wasn't successful. Being "discovered" does not guarantee success either, it takes talent. May not be to your taste, but it is still talent.
    Bleh?
Didn't this guy hate 'Cherry Pie'? I swear I remember an interview with him where he seemed almost traumatised that he wrote that song, saying he wish people would remember him for his other songs that he actually put effort into.

He wasn't that bad of a songwriter... I gotta say the song "Heaven" is awesome! RIP. Sad to see so many good musicians die because of worthless things like drugs.

Yeah but you didn't. Someone else did, and they made some good coin out of it. Don't equate technical complexity with success. The regular mans rock is edgy and straighforwards, just they way they like it.

Wasn't active towards the end of his life, but he wrote some of my favourite songs, and I'm genuinely saddened to hear of his passing. So young! RIP Jani.

If you don't like Jani, and you still comment on the article, then you should at least have enough respect to not trash him and his music. Rest in peace Jani, I'll see you around.

Am I the only one who likes the song Cherry Pie?! Uncle Tom's Cabin is good too. I feel bad for his family

RIP. Everyone knows of Uncle Tom's Cabin as a Warrant track with more credibility, but most always forget Mr. Rainmaker - both killer, respectabe (for that era) tracks that display a stark contrast to the rest of the band's material, notably thanks to the George Lynch-like chops featured.

For All You Dbags Dissing on Jani's skills go look go listen to uncle toms cabin and watch this video '
' about how he really feels on cherry pie he's got more musical talent than 1/2 you douchers...

Ok guys, all hardcore attitudes aside, Warrant was pretty big in their time. Granted most of their fans were teenage/20-something chicks but still. They had a few decent songs really. Cherry Pie not really one of them lol. I heard Heaven on the radio today at work and it actually made me stop for a second. R.I.P. Jani! More than now, Heaven isn't too far away.

I know exactly where he died. o.O Anyways, RIP Jani. You were a great songwriter, you will be missed dearly.

Uncle Tom's Cabin and Dirty Rotten Stinky Filthy Rich are great songs. Not a huge Warrant fan but this is sad. RiP

You obviously don't understand drugs or drug addiction. People **** up, it's a part of life. And as much as they regret it, they get the wrong help sometimes and it makes it worse. I don't believe the guy was a dick to his fans or anything. It's *****s like gene simmons and axl rose that piss me off and i couldn't give a rat's ass about. Even then i will still say RIP. I personally despise of warrant's music, but still, RIP Jani.

MY BROTHER!!!!! I have ranted about the heartless and disrespectful people on here, and you put into words what I couldn't!!!! You listed songs from Dog Eat Dog and Ultraphobic that average Joe are clueless about! Check out the Belly to Belly cd if you have not already! "Bitter Pill" ruled, and if you listened to songs like that, you knew he laid his heart out there in them. Even "Andy Warhol Was Right" was a dynamic trip down an envious man's mind... that to me could come from any of these haters that want to trash his success, and they don't even know it. God Bless Man! And I, for one, will miss those songs Jani!

I agree, what IS wrong with songs about sex? It was a catchy song that millions liked, that's not such a bad thing. Cheesy yes, but so what? I can appreciate epics like War and Peace as well as a good Dr. Seuss story. RIP Jani.

IIRC he was pretty damn overweight wasn't he? either way, R.I.P. I'm gunna have a mini Warrant marathon of sorts in his memory.
    Exxol
judging from his picture, it was an overdose... of hard drugs or cheeseburgers
    Fleur de Lys
What the **** is wrong with songs about sex? And why should they be so easy to write? It's just as easy to write a song about destruction and death. Metalheads, please get your feet back on the ground. RIP.

first heard aboutthis from Lordi's Amen and his Twitter post. i read up to "It's sad to hear of the death of Jani L..." and i instantly thought it said "Jani Liimatainen" and had a heart attack lol. I would be moarning bigtime if it was Liimatainen. if it werent for him, i wouldnt have picked up guitar. But at any rate, RIP Jani Lane

No, what it means is; he was willing to pull his dick out of the dirt and leave the basement to put some ****ing hard work in, so he could become successful at what he loved doing and earn a decent living for him and his family later in life. Which is more than can be said for half the people on here bitching about it, who strum away in their bedrooms where nobody gives a shit, and criticise people who have achieved more greatness than them.

a little bit annoyed by some of the comments about this, especially the ones about hair metel which is funny because im surprised anyone who complains about hair metal is cool enough to know what a guitar is, but anyway i wasnt a fan of the band but i respected what they did and there genre, RIP

Checked. RIP. I wish I didn't have to remind some of our users to be respectful about death, but yet again that seems to be the case.

Not a fan, but good night sweet prince~~~~~ Cherry Pie sucked and even he knew it. It turned me, and probably many more people, off from ever listening to anything more out of Warrant. Let that be a lesson to everyone out there about the dangers of banging out a quick single just to make a buck. R.I.P.
