Wednesday Question: Best Album Interlude

For this week's traditional Wednesday Question, we'd like to kindly ask you folks to think about interludes and answer this little thing:

What is the best album interlude?

Just so we're clear, an interlude is usually a short piece of music that serves as sort of a break or a passage between two songs or album segments.

  • Interludes are short, usually instrumental separated tracks inserted between other songs on the album (do NOT confuse interlude with intro and outro).
  • Post only one suggestion per comment after checking that your favorite wasn't already nominated (Ctrl+F and all).
  • Multiple nominations of one piece create heavy confusion, since on one hand it's unfair to the given track to take into consideration only the most upvoted nomination, but seeing that multiple nominations allow one user to give two or more votes to the same interlude, it's also unfair to other nominees not to discard it.
  • Vote up the ideas you support and vote down the ones you dislike.

We'll sum up your votes by Friday and bring you another traditional UG top list. Show us what you got now!

    The Offspring - Intermission
Is the right answer. Here's 10 hours worth of it.
Can anyone explain how the gold comment thingy works? My post has less up votes than both to post i'm replying to and another post further down at time of writing, yet mine had the gold comment tag.
    radiohead Fitter Happier haha!
I was looking for this. I think it fits in with the rest of the album quite well.
Just when you think you've heard everything, Microsoft Sam gives you existential dread
If you don't know the creed by heart, you are not a radiohead fan. Fitter happier, more productive, comfortable, not drinking too much, regular excercise at the gym 3 days a week. (you can follow it if you want)
I'd have to go with "Help Me I'm in Hell" off of NIN's "Broken" EP. It's the only instance of anything remotely calm and it's got a pretty basic chord progression. What really makes it interesting is that you can still feel tension build up more and more as it goes on, then just as you feel it start to burst out, everything goes silent for a few seconds and then BAM!!! Happiness in Slavery comes on and everything turns back up to 11.
Linkin Park - Session I don't known can it be considered as an interlude - or just as an instrumental track - but for me "Session" is just an eternal masterpiece - and one of the greatest tracks from LP...
As much as I love this song (and I do think it's one of Linkin Parks best), I consider it more of an instrumental than an interlude.  Still, I'm glad someone gave this the recognition it deserves.
    Tool - Intermission  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="

Its just so funky and jazzy, and it's a nice teaser for "Jimmy", how can you not love it!? Its musically sophisticated, but at the same time, its kinda funny. A lot like Tool actually.
    Megadeth - Dawn Patrol
    Opeth- patterns in the ivy
    reliable master
I was scratching my head trying to think of interludes and saw this. This is a truly beautiful piece of music, simple and elegant. Take my vote!
Thank you! I love how this beautiful piece leads into one of the most beautiful but also one of the most brutal songs in Opeth's discography.
Behemoth - Hekau 718 Really, my favourite track from "Zos Kia Cultus"
Cradle of Filth - Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors Maybe their music can be cheesy, but their intros and interludes are true masterpieces - and "Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors" from "Midian" (2000) is one of them!..
Anathema - Destiny Is Dead True little masterpiece from "Judgement"
Stone Temple Pilots - Wet My Bed
Summoning - Wyrmvater Glaurung No words... True dark masterpiece...
Neurosis - Resound To be honest, all interludes by Neurosis are great and true pieces of art, but "Resound" from "A Sun That Never Sets" is my favorite - it's a nice transition to "Stones From The Sky" - but for me it's a standalone art!
Failure's segues on their albums. Here's a mix of all of them so far.
    cane here to suggest these!
It's good to know there are more fans of the band out there. I'm always talking about them here on UG, they really deserve more attention
absolutely. great studio band, great live band and have probably influenced half the popular bands on here in countless ways. they make the upper end of my top 10 for sure
Protest the Hero - On Conquest and Capture This one is hidden between the end of Bone Marrow and the start of Sequoia Throne
My personal vote goes to the interlude between Spoils and Wretch!
(starts @2:58) Tim later gave that same interlude a bit more 'context' and released it as a track named "Isosceles" (just like the last part of the Fortress album it leads into):
Tiamat - Kaleidoscope Just beautiful interlude from "Wildhoney" masterpiece...
Tiamat - Trillion Zillion Centipedes Always like the atmosphere on Tiamat's albums, and it's an almost perfect interlude from "A Deeper Kind Of Slumber" (1997)
Massive Attack - Exchange (from "Mezzanine") Really an island of chill in the deep and dark ocean of "Mezzanine"
Coheed and Cambria - Keeping the Blade Perfectly takes you into the mood of the of the album.
I love Keeping the Blade but it's an intro not an interlude
An intro can be an interlude.  What you are  thinking of is an Entr'acte which is an intermission of sorts.  An interlude can be any section in a movement of a musical piece.
dredg - Brushstroke: An Elephant In The Delta Waves (feat. Azam Ali) For more all 4 interludes are really great - and it's so hard to choose only one because all of them are different, but I stopped on this one...
Sigur Rós - Með Blóðnasir Following Hoppípolla, it takes the chord progression, reverses it, and throws an entirely new arrangement on top - If that ain't cool, I don't know what is
THE MARS VOLTA - CICATRIZ ESP. Put that shit in your bong and rip it.
