Weezer have responded to an online campaign to stop them from releasing another album, insisting they'll retire if anti-fans come up with $20 million.

James Burns wants to silence the band by paying them off and he's embarked on a bid to raise $10 million to split the group.

Burns claims the Buddy Holly rockers have failed to live up to their 1996 album Pinkerton and he's taking his crusade online to find followers around the world.

The band is taking the campaign in its stride - with drummer Patrick Wilson joking they'll consider an inflated offer.

In a post on Twitter.com, he writes: "If they can make it 20 (million), we'll do the deluxe breakup."

Thanks for the report to Contactmusic.com.

The only thing I would give Weezer is a steaming turd in cellophane, as a symbol of the music they have given us over the last few years.

Why does everyone yearn for albums bands made in the past? That's the most boring thing a band can do. While it may not be the direction you like, not progressing musically and doing things different is boring. Look at Nickelback. While I don't hate them, their stuff sound essentially the same every album which is why a lot of the people dislike them, or at least I think so anyways.

MasterCard: Mr. Burns, you've racked up more than 50,000 dollars worth of debt. Burns: How am i going to pay for that? Wait, I have an idea...

how about to those who are willing to throw their money at this joke and give it to me? Seriously people are so adamant about this happening it almost takes the humor out of this article. Almost.

why can't he pay the Kings of Leon to quit? or maybe the Strokes?or for that matter all bands that play indie music

if they come up with 20 mil James Burns would not give the money to weezer, he'll keep it and runs away

am i the only one who read the drummer's comment as "we're not breaking up, so shut up already"? it seems like no one can understand even the most obvious sarcasm haha never been a huge weezer fan but you gotta love a sense of humor with a band that big

proston
haha that's funny. wish weezer would have stayed with the old school geek rock sound i fell in love with instead of all the selling out they've done but the red album still has me believing they'll return one day.
actaderock
is this real? because if they do man, that is being a sell out. And weezer is coool, instead of paying 20m for disarming weezer, pay 20m to make justin biber retire or something
simmonsalmighty
If I was Weezer I would just take the money and stay together and make more albums. Just to make buddy feel like a idiot for believing they would break up.

I honestly don't think they'll do it. And James Burns doesnt get that bands tend NOT TO TOP THEIR BEST WORK, and that he would be complaining if they remade that album for 15 years.

They got luck on their side, and that's about it. I'd laugh so hard if that group actually raised 20mil now. Haha! I'd also be happy, cuz I don't like Weezer and they're not brilliant musicians by any stretch of the term brilliant.

Maybe you should spend your time and effort doing something worthwhile like maybe trying to help people that have lost their jobs or homes, instead of wasting it on something ridiculous like this. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE BAND, DON'T FUCKING LISTEN TO THEM!!! IF SOMEONE WANTS TO BUY A WEEZER ALBUM AND GETS DISAPPOINTED, WHAT IS IT TO YOU?? GET A FUCKING LIFE!!!

Weezer might break up, The Who reforming, Van halen is comin too (If I remember correctly). Change is upon us!

lol, I totally called this on the last article when this first campaign was announced:
Tallman1984 wrote: Personally I thought this was kind of funny, because this is like giving a million needles to a heroin addict to encourage him to stop using. How is sending Weezer money going to stop them from playing when money was one of key things that helped the group continue like they did in the first place? It just seems like the most counteractive plan ever. "I'm trying to lose weight." "ALRIGHT! If we give you some McDonalds will ya f***in drop the pounds already??" This jackhole just wants his name in the papers.
This. I mean, what's stopping Weezer from going "Eh, $10 mil isn't enough, give us more or we'll put out another "crappy" album"? Besides, that $10 mil will probably just fund the production of their next album along with part of the consequent tour.
Next thing you know, they'll be asking for $30 million, or doing what others have said and break up only to form another band called Formerly Weezer or something along those lines.

This is like asking Metallica to pump out another Master of Puppets. Or Megadeth and Rust in Peace Or Anthrax and Among the Living Or AC/DC and Back in Black Or Alice in Chains and Dirt Or Soundgarden and Superunknown Or Stone Temple Pilots and Core Or Van Halen and 1984 (it's debatable between that and VH, either or) Or Pearl Jam and Ten Or Ozzy Osbourne and Blizzard of Ozz Or Machine Head and The Blackening Or Motorhead and Ace of Spades Or Motley Crue and Dr. Feelgood Or Mastodon and Crack the Skye (it's new, but the critical acclaims will occur eventually) Or Led Zeppelin and Zoso Or Iron Maiden and The Number of the Beast Or Guns N' Roses and Appetite for Destruction Or Drowning Pool and Sinner Or Def Leppard and Pyromania Or Deep Purple and Machine Head I could go on for hours. Even though some of these bands have made great albums after their peak (Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, etc.), it's still the same thing. Pinkerton and Weezer are no different, it's just from a different perspective of fan base. So just don't listen to the music, and accept that Weezer won't ever have another Pinkerton. Although I could be wrong, I mean, look at Testament. "The Formation of Damnation" is arguably their best, and it's their most recent.

Personally, i think there are plenty of "well-loved and iconic bands to come out of the 90s", and Weezer wouldn't even make it to a Top 25. He didn't say they were THE most well-loved, he said ONE of the most. .
yeah but ONE of the most, is still a stretch! Im not a fan of them, but this is a joke

Justin Bieber can't really break up,unless you're plotting gruesome murder. Just as a heads-up. That said...I might donate. Problem is,I've stopped paying attention to Weezer. I stopped caring after Make Believe.

This. I can't believe people are coming up with shit like paying people to split. If people cared to donate that much to a charity, the world would be a much better place.

I'd rather pay to see a band/an artist who has nothing worthwhile whatsoever in their career stop making albums than a band who gave us Pinkerton and Blue album.

Weezer is quite probably the least talented group of "artists" or "musicians" in world history. I mean they have close competition from the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, but I think Weezer takes the cake. That's right, I just said Weezer was worse than The Sex Pistols. Yip, Weezer sucks a whole lot.

I know, UGs news articles are pretty pathetic. One band member says a passing joke and it's one of the worlds top guitar stories? Give me a break.

If they raise $20 million Weezer should break up, then re-form under the name Weazer.
Dempsey68
doubt they'll get $20mil. besides, i'd rather $20mil was raised to assassinate osama bin laden, or someone truly crap rather than an average band.
ippystratman
the guy who came up with this clearly has no life and just wants his 15 minutes of fame. if you dont like a band, dont buy the ****ing album
rabguitarlegend
i don't get why people would pay them to split up, if you don't like them simply don't listen to them. Or are people just to stupid to grasp that concept.
Mr Pringle
$10 Million is a lot of money, but $20million for weezer to break up? Why don't you just give the $20 million to Kesha, nickelback or the jonas brothers to get the **** out of music.
im not mental
i never gave two shits about weezer. no matter what happens, i won't care.

now THIS, on the other hand, i'd donate to.

Oh noes, a band whose new albums aren't as good as the old ones! And yes I think Weezer's great.

I love Weezer. I actually like all their albums (although there are some songs on Raditude and Red Album that I would probably never listen to again). But really, if Weezer kept pumping out Pinkertons over the past few years, it would deteriorate the value of Pinkerton. People would get sick of it. Pinkerton would be back to being bashed by the community who rejected, embraced, and then rejected it again. Only one Pinkerton and only one Blue Album exist for a reason. Instead of paying Weezer to stop playing, I think James Burns should try making his own band. Who is he to say that Weezer should stop playing when he has not reached the success Weezer has? If he hated them so much, why doesn't he make his own music and prove Weezer that they should quit. Why doesn't he write songs that he think Weezer should make? Let's see James Burns write another Pinkerton if he thinks Weezer can't!
