Guitar Hero III: Latest Edition To Feature Slash, Tom Morello

Among those who are considered your typical gamers, there is a select breed that lives and breathes phrases like Star Power and Career Mode, while simultaneously cursing Nuno Bettencourt for writing the solo in Play With Me. It all comes down to a deep infatuation with Guitar Hero, a video game that has allowed many a closeted rocker to take the stage - or at least look cool on your living room carpet. What may have started out as a cult hit back in 2005 has exploded to sell millions of units, all the while inspiring Guitar Hero-themed parties across the nation. The furor is once again about to begin with the Oct. 28 release of Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock, an installment that promises to up the ante technologically and musically. Along with some big names attached to the project (Slash, Tom Morello, and Bret Michaels), GH III will also deliver some creatively wicked new ways to challenge the best of the best. So if you think that Play With Me on Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80s was a walk in the park, there's a little thing called Battle Power in Legends Of Rock that should give you the swift kick in the pants that you desire. In charge of the development this time around is the company Neversoft, which has been responsible for such games as GUN and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland in the past. Neversoft's lead designer Alan Flores gave Ultimate Guitar writer Amy Kelly an inside look at what to expect with Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock, and let's just say that many of us won't be leaving our PS3 and Xbox systems for a long, long time. UG: The latest Guitar Hero installment has some heavy hitters in the rock world involved, namely Slash, Tom Morello, and Bret Michaels. How did those musicians originally get involved with the project? Alan: With Slash and Tom Morello, we were looking for some real life guitar heroes to be the first bosses in the game. They were two guys who were really high up on our wish list of guitarists, and fortunately for us they were both huge fans of the game. Once they found out we were interested, they were totally enthusiastic and brought a lot to the game. Bret Michaels was a bit different. Aaron, one of the producers here is a good friend of a guy who plays guitar in the Bret Michaels Band. We needed someone to do motion capture moves for the singer in the game, and we asked Bret if he'd do it. He was really into the idea and said yes. Then to top it off we figured we would include him in the game as a guest singer.
"It seems like everywhere you look there is some new band that is addicted to the game."
Have you noticed more and more bands singing the praises of Guitar Hero? Yeah, it's pretty cool. It seems like everywhere you look there is some new band that is addicted to the game, which really helps when you ask artists to be a part of the game. If they are fans of the game, then they're in. When did Neversoft become the new developer behind the series? I believe it was around E3 2006. Neversoft's president, Joel Jewett, sat down with the Huang brothers from RedOctane at the bar and told them how much we loved Guitar Hero and how we had big parties in the back of our studio every Friday and played the game. So when RedOctane was looking for a new developer, they came to us and asked if we'd be into it. The rest is history. Did Neversoft take a different approach than Harmonix did in the development? Well, I don't really know what their approach to the game was, so I can't really speak to that. I will say that we tried to deliver a genuine Guitar Hero experience and stay true to the series. Are there new controllers available? I understand there is one that features a removable neck. Yes, for the Xbox360, PS3, and Wii versions there will be wireless Les Pauls. And for the PS2, we have a wireless Kramer guitar. The guitars have removable necks for greater portability, plus it gives the player the option to switch to a different neck. Who knows, down the line we may add different styles of necks - longer necks, necks with extra buttons, etc. Also, the guitars have removable faceplates, which will allow the player to customize their guitar look. Players can paint the faceplates, melt them down, glue bottle caps to them, whatever they like. There will also be various collectible faceplates available at launch with exclusive artwork. Talk a bit about the new addition of Guitar Battle. Guitar Battle is a fun new addition to the game. It's for players who want a more competitive mode of play. It's inspired by the guitar duel between Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio at the end of the movie Crossroads. Players face off against each other in a song, but instead of getting Star Power, they get Battle Power, which gives the players power-ups that they can use to attack their opponent. Some of the power-ups available include amp overload, which will shake your opponent's highway and make it harder for him to hit notes; difficulty-up, which will up his difficulty; lefty flip, which will give your opponent lefty notes, and more. It's a pretty fun mode of play for people who want to mess up their opponent. Is there an official song list and can we expect hidden songs? (See bottom of article for a full list) This year there are over 70 songs in the game with some of the biggest artists in the music industry, such as Metallica, Aerosmith, Rage Against the Machine, The Rolling Stones, and even the Sex Pistols re-united to give us a track. Also, there are over 20 bonus songs with lots of great stuff in there as well, like The Stone Roses, Killswitch Engage, and DragonForce. In order to do co-op play in Career Mode, will all songs need to be unlocked to get the full choice of songs? This year we tried a different approach to the co-op play. We blew the co-op play out into a full co-op career. Now co-op players will be able to go through their own story with cool animated cut-scenes done by Titmouse (the guys who make Metalocalypse) and play the best co-op songs in the game and unlock special co-op encore songs like Suck My Kiss from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"Down the line we may add different styles of necks - longer necks, necks with extra buttons, etc."
Xbox players have had an option to download new songs. Is it possible that those options will be available to other systems in the future? Yes, we are definitely doing downloadable songs for the PS3. As for the Wii, only time will tell. Fans of the game can sign up to be part of the GH community, which allows them some special perks. What are some of the extras available to them? The website guitarhero.com will really take the community aspect of the game to the next level. Players can sign up and start a tour group with their friends and track statistics for songs they've played. They can also earn groupies for doing activities and eventually get into the Hall of Fame. There will also be tournaments and special community events that will allow players to win prizes like T-shirts, faceplates, posters, etc. There are plenty of players who host Guitar Hero parties/tournaments of their own. Can we expect to have some official tournaments hosted by the makers of Guitar Hero III in the coming year? Absolutely! In addition, players will be able to use the Rock Radius on guitarhero.com to see if there are any tournaments or events in their area. Is online play an option? Yes, all of the multiplayer modes, face-off, pro face-off, battle, co-op will be available online. There's been some talk that DS will be getting its own version of Guitar Hero? Is that true? There has definitely been some talk about a DS version. I hope so, and I would love to play it. What is the retail cost of Guitar Hero III? Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (bundled with a guitar) will retail for $99.99 on the Xbox 360 and PS3, and $89.99 for the Wii and PS2. What is your impression of the new game Rock Band? I haven't gotten a chance to play it. But I look forward to giving it a shot. Are you already starting to gather ideas for the 4th installment? Well, we have plenty of ideas of where we can take the franchise. As for whether or not we are working on a 4th installment, I can't really say right now. Check back with us in 6 months. Dude..just...dude. No. Not cool. Tom Morello is one of the greater guitarists of this generation to ever grace our undeserving ears. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, yes, but..you crossed a line.

WTF?!? you're dad is absolutely right. If you think $100 is a walk in the park to get then go buy the game for yourself. It's to entertain you, not your parents, so why should they pay? AND all you have to do is clean your room? ad asking your mom instead??? that's called manipulation and people will hate you for it, especially your dad, and family isn't anyone you want on your bad side in the long run. Anyway back to the game.

Checked. Some of you guys are making me lose hope in the future of humanity. "OMG itz nuthin lyk REEL GITAR!!11!!" It's not supposed to be. It's not supposed to make you better at guitar. Just like Dance Revolution isn't supposed to make you good at dancing. It's just a different way for kids in their living rooms to interact with their video games. Get a grip, you elitist losers.

is it just me, or does the sex pistols remake of anarchy in the uk completely suck ass!? i mean seriously, what the hell were they thinking? just write a damn new song or use the one from '77. the music wasnt bad in it but johnny rotten sounds horrible, it doesnt even sound like him, even though it is. that has been my only beef with the game so far, i havent unlocked every song yet

The guy isn't that great at guitar. Excuse me, have you listened to all of his songs, i garentee you he can shred the pants of off most famous players. Before Rage against the machine he was a serious shreder and on the first RATM album he used his technique and speed on tracks like "know your enemy" but he prefers to play using more progressive techniques which he pioneered, it's Far more impressive to the dollar-a-dozen l33t shreddorz by miles, mainly because he creates his own sounds and makes the guitar what he wants it to do, not to just rip off Yngwie
Did you know Tom Morello wrote the foundations of the guitar for Killing in the Name while teaching a guitar student about a scale?

i know exactly what you mean. after i played the first song, i went right to the store to buy dragonforce, and it wasn't there. i was like, did i get a defective copy of the game? turns out, after i looked it up on wikipedia, that you had to beat the game to play it. i'm only one song away, this one took me longer than the other GH's to beat, which is good. anyway, great song list, it's great that there's less covers and more recordings from the bands themselves. it's totally worth the $50

I love guitar. I love guitar hero. I'm great at guitar. I'm great at guitar hero. Guitar hero is a good finger exercise. What ever! I play cuz my friends play and they can't play real guitar. So what, it's just a game. Have fun period. (not so fun? then don't play, don't buy, and don't sit here and complain.)

i like guitar hero but i hate the playlist, they only put like 5 songs you actually want to play. Im not gonna buy this, just make your own custom disc with GH 2 and you can play any song you want
      Emopunk824
punkrockgrl9 : the only thing i hate about guitar hero is how it basically commercialized guitar.... because of this game everyone decides that guitar isn't too hard and they can play. it reallyyyyy pisses me off. i know tht pisses me off to
      Emopunk824
Guitar Hero is a great game and helps as a finger exercise but i dont understand why people would buy different necks and different designs for a game controler. Why not buy stuff for your real guitar? But what ever i havent played GH 3 yet but the playlist sounds good. The DragonForce must be extra hard n im glad that they have Miss Murder by AFI on there its a great song.

why does everyone want AC/DC in this game? AC/DC songs only have like 3 chords in there songs and i guess you would consider those things as "solos", but they're not that good. well, they were a lot better with bonn scott, but those days are over. and b'ys, calm down about the whole "guitar is better than guitar hero" or guitar hero is just a game". everybody's got different tastes. everybody's entitled to there own opinion. you guys spend all your time bitchin at each other like a couple drunk chicks at a party. i really liked guitar hero 3 because of the song list. a lot of music i haven't heard of, which is always god for me. Peace and love, and calm down b'ys (that means people in Newfoundland).

whoa..i completely forgot about that.... well YYZ is a good song tho... ..yea there's no way of gettin out of this. i still sound like a complete idiot.

OMG im so tired of Guitar Hero. I mean its a cool game and all, but id much rather play a real guitar. Its a lot more rewarding to learn those songs on a real guitar.
      18_and_life
All in all, for those who like the game, this game was great. For those who don't, we know real guitar is better, so what. Not everyone can play real guitar.

I don't like Guitar Hero. Not that it's not fun. I just think it's such a waste of time getting good at pushing five stupid buttons when I could be getting better at real guitar. Also, it's kinda' discouraging when you master a song on Guitar Hero only to realize that could never do it on your real guitar, though you've been playing it for much longer.
      FrankenFather
Over here, where I live, no one gives a damn what you can do on the real guitar. I play great crap all the time, but people just say "So?" Someone else will come up, say they can play so-and-so on Guitar Hero, and the same exact person will say "NO F@#KING WAY! SLEEP WITH ME NOW!" The only thing exaggerated here is that they wouldn't say "sleep"... I'm not even joking.
      6sic6_blank
I enjoy GH, but you just can't look as cool compared to shredding on an actual guitar.
      belavista man
Wow... that track list sucks... Best ones on there must be Paranoid, Paint It Black, Sunshine Of Your Love and Welcome to the Jungle... Ha ha... Paranoid is gonna clash with Rock Band; they both have it! Hardest song for playing the game will be the DragonForce one... Don't like the band myself, but it'll be rock solid to get past :S
      Lonely-Enigma
As well as the song linups for the first two games i don't especially want to buy it, i have the first two, they are fun to play every once in a while but most of the tracks on the game are pretty rubbish as well as this one, one or two will be fun but the linup for rock band is much better even though there are a lot less songs, they are better
      Kreuger
They should do a version where fans can pick the songs. I'm sick of their shitty songs from good bands. We should be allowed to nominate a band/song and if so many people also vote for that it can be set into a final selection which can be done by the company.
      oyoyoytnt!
i agree with randumbsk8punk, playing real guitar is much better, no offense but i think guitar hero is for video game wanna be's that would rather play ps2 or xbox than play a real guitar

He got plugged into this big Marshall stack and then he just unleashed the most awful about of shit! He turns and looks at everybody and says "I don't get it! I'm a master at Guitar World!"
rofl. Another great example of people trying to pick up a guitar after being a "master" at guitar hero. And im guessing that you meant guitar hero. GH is a good game, its just that you cant expect to start pulling out marty friedman solos out of your ass on your first go.

Yes Guitar Hero is a great game. Yes I have it. Yes I put Guitar Hero stickers on my real guitar, BUT, I just think that some people need to realize that its just a game and playing the game and playing guitar are nothing alike. So rag on me cuz I cant beat Thunderhorse on expert cuz I can play that shit in real life on a real guitar. NUFF SAID.

Guitar Hero is really just a way to make yourself feel like youre good at the guitar, even though you might suck in reality. Don't get me wrong, its a great game. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

i've always thought the same way... this game looks fun, regardless of what the naysayers go on about. sure, if someone put all those hours into a real guitar they'd be awesome. but think about it, its a GAME your slagging for gods sake, grow a pair and suck it up. it won't bite you, i swear.
