Killswitch Engage: 'We've Got Two Songs Completed For New Record'

Paige Montgomery from Alternative Revolt Magazine and the Denver Post Reverb conducted an interview with Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach for Idobi radio at the first stop of the Trespass America tour in Broomfield, Colorado. Leach discussed returning to Killswitch Engage, preparing for tour, and he revealed what the band has in store for their next studio release. On how it feels to be back in Killswitch Engage: Jesse: "It feels great, man. Surprisngly, [it was] a natural transition. I think the one thing for me was just learning [former Killswitch Engage singer] Howard's [Jones] material, learning how I was gonna, like, live in the songs and make them my own, and once that happened, it feels natural. It almost feels, in a way, that I hadn't left, but it is ten years later and we're all much different people, so it just feels a lot better than it did back then." On the progress of the songwriting and recording sessions for Killswitch Engage's new album: Jesse: "We've got two songs completed for our new record and another 12-13 to go that I'm gonna finish up in the fall... Thankfully, [they didn't have any vocals done with Howard] - it was just music; it had no lyrics, no vocals - Howard hadn't attempted to do anything, so it was a nice, clean slate. [The stuff sounds] fresh, fast, heavy... I couldn't be more stoked to sing on the record. As a matter of fact, once I signed up to do the audition for those guys, they took me back to Adam's [Dutkiewicz, guitar] house and we listened to the record and that totally sold me. When I heard the record, I was like, 'I've gotta sing on this.'" Leach sang on the band's first self-titled album, which came out in 2000, and on their landmark 2002 Roadrunner debut "Alive Or Just Breathing". Leach left the band in 2002 and was replaced by Howard Jones, but his work on "Alive Or Just Breathing" has always been revered by diehard, longtime Killswitch Engage fans. Rock Am Ring performance:

i'll be honest: i didnt like jesse's vocals too much on the early killswitch stuff, but when i heard times of grace, i was blown away. i'm not the biggest killswitch fan by any means, but this is definitely a record i'm looking forward to. a lot. his vocals sound great at rock am ring. getting my hopes up for kse's follow up with jesse.

Alive or Just Breathing was one of my favorite albums as a young teen. It stands out as one of those "soundtrack to your life" type of albums in the sense that some of the songs remind me of really awesome memories of my teen years. I LOVED Jesse's voice. KSE was my first taste of metalcore and I thought his screams were so brutal. When they got Howard, I liked him from Blood Has Been Shed and I liked The End of Heartache but the following albums just seemed...weird. Glad Jesse's back, can't wait to hear what they got cooking for us.

Alive or Just Breathing was the only KSE album I really liked (just not a fan of Howards vocals/style), so I'm pretty excited to hear this.

^ says everything I was going to say. Jesse is doing pretty damn awesome with the Howard-era stuff sounds like. Can't wait to see them on the Trespass America tour.

I think back then, Jesse just didn't have the confidence in his voice, especially in his clean singing. He has made huge progress over that time though, and I'm quite looking forward to this new record.

check out the stuff Jesse did with Seemless...not as heavy as KSE but it has a lot of groove and is heavy in its own right

IMO, Howard was the voice of KSE. I'd rather have a Howard-led KSE plus Times Of Grace, but Jesse seems to be ding well with the newer KSE songs.

I'm looking forward to this but also sad at the fact that this more than likely rules out the continuation of Times of Grace..

Jesse's voice is good on the screaming parts, I think he needs a little work on the clean vocals on Rose of Sharyn. As far as My Curse goes on the clean vocals they almost sound too much like Howards. KSE I want to hear Jesse sing the songs not have Jesse up there and hearing Howards voice. I'm glad he's back in the band so that when the new songs are written, they are written for him and I'm not hearing him trying to match another singer. Like on My Last Serenade, I can definitely tell the difference when each one of them sings that song that it is original and unique. Didn't hear much of that with these two songs. Hopefully KSE doing songs where Howard was the vocalist are kept to a minimum because I don't want to hear Howard through that mic. He was a good vocalist at the time but he left and its time to move on with Jesse back in it and I hope it stays that way. Looking forward to new KSE soon.

Ah, the ol' Jesse VS. Howard debate. I've always preferred Jesse, Howard is good, but Jesse just blends perfectly to KsE's music and it was never right without him in the band. And needless to say, Jesse's vocals have come a long way since Alive or Just Breathing and I expect big things with this album. If you listen to the song "This Is Confrontation", you'll hear Jesse's voice is in top form.

Is it just me, or was Adam D's per-song banter ****ing hilarious!? Looking forwrd for the album, KSE rarely dissappoint, one of the best metall bands of the 00's surely!?

Don't really know too much about Killswitch Engange to be quite honest... have only heard about two or three of their songs, but that one guitar player (the one who does the growls) seems to be really annoying... In any event: good luck to them and hopefully their fanbase is not as close-minded as others when it comes to lineup changes

Howard has better cleans than Jesse, but Jesse has better screams and writes better lyrics IMO. I'm not sure how much input either vocalist had on the music, but Jesse-era wins that too. Granted, I haven't listened to Killswitch in ages, but I'll check out the new album just for nostalgia's sake.

I just have to post this, Joe - the rhythm guitarist - is wearing a mastodon shirt that I also own and it's so friggin badass. There's a golden bear roaring in the middle of it lol.

AOJB was incredible. I can't wait to see what they come out with now. I haven't really liked KSE since end of heartache, and jesse's stuff always has been better.

I just thought of something. What if KSE did something like the Foo Fighters did with their guitars; What if KSE were to have 2 vocalists: BOTH Howard and Jesse? D: THAT WOULD BE SO COOL. i mean just look at Take This Oath.

They've put out the same album three times in a row. I hope this new one is drastically different.
