Pantera: Philip Anselmo Talks Hypothetical 'Reunion'
2
Ned of the WGRD 97.9 FM radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan recently conducted an interview with former Pantera and current Down frontman Philip Anselmo. You can now listen to the entire 13-minute chat in the YouTube clip below. A couple of Blabbermouth.net excerpts follow. On the possibility of a Pantera reunion with Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne) filling in for the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott on guitar: Anselmo: "That's an interesting question. Well, look, before anything like that could possibly happen, Vince [Vinnie Paul Abbott, Dimebag's brother and former Pantera drummer] and I would have to actually be in the same room, we'd have to sit down, hash out whatever differences, demons... whatever... we'd have to hash it all out. And as far as Zakk Wylde goes, I'm not so sold on all that, because I think he and I have to sit down and hash some crap out. That day has not come yet, and [when] that day comes, I can comment further on it. As of right now, it's just talk." On whether he thinks a possible Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in the future would be a good opportunity for the surviving members of Pantera to reunite on stage: Anselmo: "Well, first and foremost, I can't even imagine us being inducted into the Hall Of Fame, but then again, I couldn't even imagine us having the amount of success that we've done. I don't look into the crystal ball of it all. All I do is what I do, and if people like it, that's their decision. I don't really have much say-so in that, and I don't expect things like this. First of all, like I say, the whole Hall Of Fame thing would be, actually, quite surprising to me. But if it had to happen like that, believe me, if I knew Vince and Rex [Brown, former Pantera bassist] were gonna be there, you bet your a-s I would be there - heck yeah, I would be there, man. I would show up with the best intentions in mind. I'm the type of the guy to where I can't hold a grudge, man. I do forgive; it's just my nature. Like I say, there is a lot of stuff for Vince and I to hash out. And I think, me personally, the way I feel about it is I think we can hash that stuff out if I was ever given a chance to talk to the guy - even on the freaking phone. But I'm not afforded that luxury, so really, once again, it's just wishful thinking, but like I say, my door is wide open. F--king, man, I really wish it."

Yeah I don't really think it should happen. Dime was the soul of that band and it would be weird to see Pantera without him. And please God do not make a hologram of Dime playing with them.

Zakk and Robb are good in their own bands... I wouldn't ever want them to front Pantera. I wouldn't want ANYONE to front Pantera but Dimebag.

I must be the only person who thinks Zakk Mylde is overrated. Anyone can squeal like a cat in heat with the proper equip. A Pantera reunion will never happen. It would be awesome to see Anselmo, Vinnie, and Rex reunite for like, a tribute DVD or an induction into the R&R Hall of Fame, but Pantera had one of the greatest guitarists (bar none) that will never be duplicated/replaced. Deal with it.

I doubt it'd be a full reunion if anything they'd play a few shows a bit like what black sabbath are doing and people who are saying zakk wylde isn't good, he was one of dimebags best friends they grew up together, so yeah it would be right for him to play with them.

Amen brother. And Pantera died with Dimebag and Dimebag died with Pantera.

i don't know, maybe a concert for the ten years anniversary of dime's death with guest and of course friend's guitar players like zakk or kerry, despite if they are good or not, could be worthy to watch, and of course, with all the respect that dimebag deserves

DIMEBAG FANS HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Except Dimebag put them in tasteful places. And if you could play like that you'd wank the hell out of a guitar too.

Agreed, but the thing about Zakk is, YES, he does pinch harmonics that anyone can do, but Dime did his squeal over and over again too. however, both of them were GREAT friends back in the day. if it weren't for Zakk telling Dimebag, and i quote, "You are the greatest guitarist out there. Dime, you should just forget Phil and do your own thing with Vinnie" erego, Damageplan was born. Honestly, Zakk can play all of Dimebag's songs, he's not doing it instead of Dime, he's going at it in HONOR of dimebag. and i'd LOVE to hear them tour, RIP Dimebag Darrell

Please, please don't let King or Wylde replace Dimebag. Yes, they were his close friends, but can they play like Dime played? FUCK NO! I don't want to hear every sound note a pinch harmonic and some whanky whammy bar rapes by King. Both of them can't replay Dime's playing.

I stopped reading here because I assumed he was going to say "Dimebag would have to come back from the dead."

I love Zak, but also think he is overated. I really like his stuff in the beginning and loved what he did with Pride & Glory. I think if they did this they should do a tribute show and have a selection of guitarists come out. You know Zak would be one of them. If it would happen, period.
    Eclectic Lizard
It would be great if they did it as a one off tribute sort of thing, but a tour or album would not be a good idea without Dime.

I have been trying and literally can not think of ONE person that could play guitar for Pantera. Not a single person. Thats intense! Screw a reunion, I think the band ended on a great note.

Ol Drake from Evile could do it better than anyone else. I still don't know how I feel about a "reunion" but Ol is definitely the one. Check out their cover of Cemetery Gates and their three albums. Amazing band.

Cool interview, makes me curious about his solo record.

Zakk Wylde may be over-rated, but Dimebag is also extremely over-rated. They're both good but they aren't exactly guitar gods.

You gotta remember dude, Phil was kinda high off his ass for most of the last decade..he's sober now which is why he wants to be forgiven and apoligize for things he said.

Unfortunately there will never be a Pantera reunion, at least musically. Nobody will be able to stand in for Dime. It's not about playing ability. His sound and stage presence, as well as he and Vinnie's ability to read each other's minds, is irreplaceable. Also right now Vinnie Paul HATES Phil, and has said he never wants to be in the same room as him again. They haven't spoken in years, and I feel it would take a great change of heart for Vince to come around. So unless several miracles happen a pipe dream Pantera reunion is just that, a pipe dream.

This is the only area of discussion that I would permit the whole "hologram" garbage being a legitimate possibility.

i dnt see a reunion ever happenin but if it did id probably have the guy from sign of the southern cross play guitar. if they done a few live shows id be fine with that but id be pissed if they tried recordin new stuff.

they should find a amazingly talented guitarist on the internet or youtube and train him and tour as Phil Anselmo and friends or something, record a new album and play Pantera covers at their shows along with new songs.
