Wilco Gets Animated With Popeye & Olive Oyl For 'Dawned On Me' Video
When we first saw that Wilco was featured in a "Popeye The Sailor Man" comic strip with its own brand of spinach, we figured it was nothing more than a nod to the band's unconventional merch efforts. Now it all makes sense. For their new video for "Dawned On Me", the Chicago rockers partnered with King Features to be animated alongside Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto and the rest of the "Popeye" gang. Despite frontman Jeff Tweedy looking, ahem, a little off as a cartoon character, he still gets the girl. Maybe Popeye should trade his weights for an acoustic guitar, try the sensitive rocker thing for a bit. Watch the Darren Romanelli-directed video below. At one point in the clip, guitarist Nils Cline sees baby Swee'Pea cuddling up to his ankle and proceeds to use the child as a glorified guitar pick. Disturbing? A little. As for the Wilco brand of spinach that encorporated into the clip, there's a winky website for it. With the existence of Wilco-branded popcorn and coffee, though, we wouldn't be surprised if cans of spinach bearing Tweedy's face were actually in the pipeline.
Thanks for the report to Billboard.com.
