Monday Fresh: New Offspring Album
11
It's been four long years since fans have heard new music from the renowned California punk veterans. After being hold up for almost a year in their recording studio, The Offspring are finally set to release their ninth full-length album titled Days Go By on June 25, 2012. The upcoming LP contains a total of 12 tracks and has been produced by Bob Rock (who also treated all of Metallica's 90s albums). It is also the first Offspring record to feature Pete Parada on drums (he replaced Atom Willard back in 2007). As a part of the record's promotion, the title track "Days Go By" was premiered on LA radio station KROQ on April 27, 2012 (song's available for streaming below). As guitarist Noodles said in an interview with KROQ, "the record's been done for a few weeks now and we've been sitting on it. Nobody's heard it. You're sitting on this thing and you want people to hear it, it's always a really weird time." The band has been playing "Days Go By" in various forms for a couple months already but according to Dexter Holland, it's gone through many revisions. "It's been a work in progress. We've been working on this record for a couple of years and this is one of the first ones we wrote. It's gone through stages where we'll play it for a while and say, you know that could be a little bit better Usually people don't know about that as we revise songs but now with the Internet it's different. We were just in Japan and we were gonna debut a new song off the record and we knew that as soon as we played it in Japan it would be on YouTube We're basically playing it for the whole world." The band are set to tour this summer, with their festival appearances set to include Rock In Rio festival in Portugal, Punkspring festival in Japan and Denmark's Skive festival. The Offspring have yet to confirm UK shows they were last in the UK to appear at last summer's Reading And Leeds Festivals. The tracklisting for "Days Go By" is as follows: 01. The Future Is Now 02. Secrets From The Underground 03. Days Go By 04. Turning Into You 05. Hurting As One 06. Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk) 07. All I Have Left Is You 08. OC Guns 09. Dirty Magic 10. I Wanna Secret Family (With You) 11. Dividing By Zero 12. Slim Pickens Does The Right Thing And Rides The Bomb To Hell P.S. It is yet unclear whether track #9 would be simply a re-recorded version or a completely new (possibly acoustic) rendition of the fan-favorite from 1992's Ignition.

The new song ain't all that bad. The guitar solos/riffs remind me of the Foo Fighters' "Times Like These".

Gotta agree. I get the same feeling of strong resemblance with "Times Like These" by Foos even though their song was in weird time signature, this one's standard. I wonder what are they gonna do to Diry Magic - one of my personal favs.

I gotta say, the song is ok for like the soft one, still it gets me worried for the rest of the album.

I think I'm alone in this, but I think Splinter has been their best album yet. So I am hoping this album has a similar feel.

Dear Bob Rock, Please can you stop making my favourite bands suck with your ultra poppy productions. I own a copy of every non-Bob-Rock Offspring record, but this (and its predecessor) is too much. Please stop castrating the balls off of rock music, you industry-level hack. Yours sincerely, Poor kid wanting punk to rock again.

Their last album kind of bummed me out, only a few songs were enjoyable to me. This came on the radio yesterday and it disappointed me at how "radio friendly" it sounded. Its their band but im kinda bummed, its a far cry from their younger years which I preferred a lot more.

New song is pretty bland, but can't wait for the new DIrty Magic version! Seriously great song.

I think you just failed your interview.

Sounds like a cross between girls got issues amd times like these by the foos. Backing vocals are a bit country in places, but I don't mind. May have to go through a nostalgic offspring phase at some point this summer! Also people bitching about the song content, its california pop punk, don't search for so much deepness!

So pumped for this! This album is gonna have ignition written all over it. Between the sound of the new song, some of the song titles, and the remake of one of my favorite songs of the album.. this is going to be a real treat. Junes gonna be a great month!

Even if it wasn't for sounding like a particular Foo Fighters song, it kind of sounds like they're taking a Foo Fighters sort of direction -- generic radio pop-rock -- which is great compared to how they spent most of the last decade, but still disappointing compared to what they could be.

That's cos The Offspring are fun & upbeat to listen to, Dexter's voice just gives a sense on happiness (to me anyway) whereas Nickleback try to be "angry & heavy" but they just sound cheesy, I'm aware The Offspring are too but who cares when it's chilled & upbeat

Mediocre, just like their previous album. They should've quit a decade ago, tbh. And this is coming from a long-time fan.

Wow, I actually played Dirty Magic on an acoustic today, and it sounds pretty cool. Try it!

Will be a test of sorts for me personally. I hope they aren't going to go in the direction many of the bands are that I listened to growing up. Glad I have The Dead Weather. Listen up.

Those weren't working titles, they were supposed to be themes.

I'll admit that I'm a little worried about Dirty Magic. I wouldn't have any problem with a re-recorded older song being used as a bonus track or a B-side, but to have it actually on an album as a new song?! Isn't that technically cheating? What's next? I wondoer what the tracklist for next album will look like... 1. Self-Esteem, 2. The Kids Aren't Alright, 3. Gone Away...

Got an e-mail today with some European dates with pre-sale tickets of 5 shows, 2 of which are in London (5th and 6th June) playing the whole of Ignition and some new songs and other old songs (presumably old means not from new album rather than ignition/self-titled era). The shows are set to be announced May 1st and go on sale this Friday 4th. For that reason I'm guessing Dirty Magic is a re-working.

OC Guns reminds me of the title from Ignition "L.A.P.D" which was a very anti-police song. tracks 4 a nd 5 could be My Girlfriend is a B-tch. The first 2 tracks could be anti-war and anti-police. Very open to interpretation of course though what with us only having titles as it stands.

Pretty sure those were just working titles. Those songs are probably still on the album. I'm stoked! Gotta love this band! They're always fun to kick back and listen to!

Yes now I see that it is supposed to say song's, I was confused because they omitted the necessary word 'the'. As in 'the song's available for streaming below.

This doesn't sound like THE Offspring. Sounds like it's the offspring of The Cult and Joe Satch or something

Dirty magic? That was like my favorite song about 10 years ago when I was still a kid, I'm very excited about that. The original quality off that song really sucked, normally that's not a problem with punk music. I felt that song is different though.

DIRTY MAGIC!!! Seriously even if the album is kinda a flop I'll still be happy that they're giving this song the treatment it deserves (if you can find the acoustic version online its amazing)
