Welcome to our new monthly review of the month, where we look back at the biggest stories of the month. And what a month September was. We saw Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic calling for Nirvana to tour Australia and a new album by Dream Theater finally arrived much to the joy of Ultimate Guitar readers around the world. There were a couple of clashes too. Josh Homme said publicly to rapper Jay-Z "You should f--k off," and the Insane Clown Posse were sued by an ex-employee who made a range of sexism allegations against fellow staff at their label. But Septemeber will be remembered for more than that. Here's the big stories that caused a stir this month.
Avenged Sevenfold rip off everyone awesome?
Avenged Sevenfold smashed into the top of the Billboard charts with their new album "Hail to the King." But some are critical of the band, including Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn who has slammed A7X for ripping off classic metal acts. "Who knew that re-recording Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Megadeth songs could be such a worldwide hit!?" he said while dropping ten jokes about the band.
Science proves metal makes you happy
As if we needed proof, a recent study found that listening to metal leaves people with a strong sense of wellbeing and calmness. There were also hints that listening to metal makes you more likely to complete tasks, though don't ask us to get much done when we listen to Tool at full volume while we wait patiently for their long-awaited new record.
Mumford & Sons go on hiatus
The global population is divided into two camps: those that like waistcoats, and those that don't. The former were gutted to see news that Mumford & Sons is going on hiatus now they've finished extensive touring duties for their "Babel" album, presumably after their record label worked them to the bone. But they're not splitting, and will probably get back to work as soon as they're all rested up.
Top 10 Roundup
Every week, we ask Ultimate Guitar readers to nominate and vote for the very best in a category. Here's a roundup of the resulting top 10s:
That's it for this month, but look out for more in future posts where we'll be looking to include the funniest comment of the month (if you stand out!) and a collection of the winning songs in our weekly "Track of the Week" vote. What's the best thing that happened to you in September? Let us know in the comments. See you next month!
