The record follows 2011's "The Hunter."

Mastodon have announced details of their new album, Consequence of Sound reports (via NME).

Titled "Once More Round the Sun," it was recorded in Franklin, Tennessee, with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Deftones, Alice in Chains) at the helm. No specific release date has been given for it yet but it is expected to be out later this year.

Speaking to Paste, bassist Troy Sanders described the forthcoming album as "pure, authentic Mastodon."

"We're all over the world as far as themes go but there are a few sprinkles of epic goodness. A lot of people ask us if it kicks off where 'The Hunter' left off. And to a large degree, I suppose yes. We recorded it and took it on the road with us, and then we headed back to our rehearsal space and started working out ideas. I've had a lot of time to ingest this record, and it's solid. It's a large slab of granite. I'm once again completely proud of these guys."

He also revealed that 30 minutes worth of music had been left off the album, which would form a new EP to be released after the LP.

Finally, definitely one of the albums I'm looking forward to most this year
Aw dang, can't they at least show us some of the artwork in the meantime
Agreed, Mastodon album artwork is genuinely artistic.
It's so good that you don't need to be a Mastodon fan to appreciate it. I've had plenty of people at the office who were intrigued by my desktop backgrounds, which were Mastodon album covers. As a matter of fact, it was the album covers that got me interested in Mastodon.
Paul Romano is the guy who did the albums up until Hunter. I hope he comes back. I guess the word carving for the cover of Hunter helped convey the theme of the element of wood, but I liked the other ones much better. The albums gonna kick ass regardless of whats on the cover though \m/
I hate to admit it, but I hope they add an apostrophe at the beginning of "Round."
Haha, great point but i bet the don't!
they have, you sir just got yourself listened to by none other than mastodon. either that or brann and co is as much of a grammer nazi as you are
Easily the album I am most looking forward to this year. Love these guys and everything they touch turns to gold. Bloody, metal gold.
Can't wait to hear some of the new songs when they play Chicago next month.
So instead of updating the previous article with this info when it was pretty much confirmed that that IS the title the same day the last article came out, they went ahead and made this new one instead? I love Mastodon very very much and love seeing news about them. But this makes no sense. Now if they had the cover artwork shown here that'd be a different story.
By "pure Mastodon", what do they mean? Remission???
Probably more like anything after Blood Mountain. Leviathan and Remission were amazing, but I don't think of those albums when I think of Mastodon.
Leviathan was one of the first albums I ever owned, so I do. Remission however, is definitely their weakest imo.
    Maybe some metal this time?
What's your definition of metal? Any examples?
I think he's referring to the radio rock that was the majority of Hunter. I agree, it was more simple and catchy. Less prog than any of their other albums. I grew up on Remission, Leviathan, and Call of the Mastodon so Mastodon, to me, is a sludge metal band that evolved into prog metal and devolved into radio rock when they got popular (not to say Hunter was bad. There's nothing wrong with it at all; it just wasn't.....Mastodon). Heres to hoping the next album is a turn around.
"He also revealed that 30 minutes worth of music had been left off the album, which would form a new EP to be released after the LP" This will annoy doubt a "Deluxe Edition" or "Tour Edition" that will be released 6 months after the LP screwing over those (like me) who buy the album day 1. I assume a label decision and not a band one...
This must be what it was like growing up in the 80s, having someone tell you Metallica is the greatest, best and most epic metal in the board, while ignoring 90% of metal, and I say that as a fan of Mastodon and Metallica. A great Mastodon album is not the best prog or metal anything, save the hyperbole.
Not many people were saying Metallica were the greatest anything in the 80s. They were just getting started and still growing as a band. Now Iron Maiden in the 80s...forget about it.
The way Brann put it in a previous article, the album is supposed to be fast and pretty epic, while the EP is going to be "doom gloom". Either way new Mastodon is my biggest anticipation this year.
