Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy revealed in a new Twitter message that he is currently working on a new project with Symphony X frontman Russell Allen. He writes, "Very excited about a new project I'm working on [with] one my [favorite] singers in the world: my bro, Sir Russell Allen." He adds, "Wait 'till you hear this sh-t!!!" Portnoy recently began work on a new project with guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs), multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock's Beard), bassist Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs) and vocalist Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev, Endochine). The group's debut album is tentatively due later in the year. Just days after it was announced that he'd been dismissed as the touring drummer for Avenged Sevenfold, Portnoy revealed that he tried to rejoin Dream Theater, and was rebuffed. Portnoy, who co-founded Dream Theater more than 20 years ago, abruptly quit the band this summer while on tour with Avenged Sevenfold. Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

They're kind of playing this out in the wrong way by having their lawyers deny him. I say the admirable thing would have been to let him back in the band and put all the mishaps of 2010 behind them.

For real haha A7X has NOTHING to do with Portnoy's troubles. Wrong place, wrong time for them... and that's why they let him go. Although he was 100% there for them when The Rev passed, he brought too much drama to their name. I feel like DT should have been a little more compassionate. I love DT and used to love Portnoy but frankly he got what he deserved...he didnt come crawling back to DT for "the fans" like he said..he came back because he realized he ****ed up and he was trying to not like an idiot...I say good riddance

Mike Portnoy said "sh-t" in HIS post. They quoted him. U-G isn't censoring anything, because Portnoy censored it himself in the original post.

Hope it's good, but my expectations are pretty low because I can't stand Symphony-X. Saw them with DT a few years ago and they were terrible. It could be another band in the long list of mediocre 'supergroups' that have come about in the last few years. I don't understand the censorship on this site; you're allowed to type 'sh-t' but putting an 'i' in there is out of the question. Everyone knows what it's supposed to say so who's benefit are you doing it for?

I was kind of expecting Mike to do anything he could get his hands on Nah. But seriously. Pretty cool. It wasn't the article I was hoping for (I've checked religiously every morning for the announcement of DT's new drummer), but I guess it'll do.

Dude, I'm like the Double Rainbow guy right now..... It's too muuuuuch!!! Seriously, though, those guys were always on my dream team. I always thought they should combine forces.....or just replace James LaBrie with Russell. (It should've been YOU James!!! *Shakes fist*) Just kidding! They're two of my favorite bands, but I think they're both occasionally hit and miss, writing masterpieces and then...not-so-masterpieces to put it nicely. Regardless of their bands, though, both guys are insanely talented. This news just gets me excited. Hopefully the rest of the lineup is just as awesome and relevant.

This will be nothing short of epic, assuming they can get a strong backing vocalist at guitar or bass...because no offense to Russell, but his voice is nothing but rasp without the harmonies. But damn is he good with harmony to balance it.
