Flying Colors, the spectacular new virtuoso prog/pop/rock band, featuring drummer Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater) and guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple), will release their eponymous debut album in the UK on Monday March 26th, followed by a US release on Tuesday March 27th.

Released by Music Theories Recordings, the debut album includes the talents of Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Casey McPherson (lead vocals, guitar), and Steve Morse (lead guitar).

"The album has bits and pieces of what you'd expect from each of us," says Portnoy. "The sum of all its parts led to brand new, unchartered territory for everyone involved."

The formation of Flying Colors began with a simple idea: virtuoso musicians and a pop singer joining together to make new-fashioned music the old fashioned way. Refreshing, classic, old and new, the recordings are saturated with the many styles, tones and hues of the players who, in becoming a band, have delivered a unique fusion of vintage craftsmanship and contemporary music.

Mike Portnoy was the co-founding member and drummer for one of the world's biggest prog metal bands Dream Theater. Neal Morse is the co-founding member of the prog rock band Spock's Beard and is currently the prog rock supergroup Transatlantic. David LaRue plays bass for the Dixie Dregs and has also worked with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Steve Morse has been playing lead guitar for Deep Purple for the last 16 years. Founder and leader of Alpha Rev, Casey McPherson, has enjoyed major success in the US with multiple hits including the song "New Morning".

"It was quite an experience," recalls Dave LaRue. "The band moved at a fast pace, ideas flying around the room at all times. Sections of tunes were arranged, and then re-arranged. Ideas were tried every which way until we made them work, or, in some cases, discarded them altogether. Just keeping track of everything was a challenge! The album is filled with trial and triumph. It's been an inspiring challenge melding folk, prog, pop, and metal all into one big recording."

This band has a much better guitarist than Adrenaline Mob. I'm actually interested.

Lol, for some reason it just feels like Mike joining forces with Steve Morse is his way of getting back at John Petrucci: Steve is one of his biggest guitar heroes (if not THE) I hope I'm completely wrong about that 'cos that would be an incredibly childish thing to do...

Or maybe, the reason it was boring is because you were listening to Joe Satriani, and you've just directed the blame toward LaRue.

What another band?? Is Porntnoy trying to break Mike Terrana's record of being in many bands as posible? The good thing is that Steve Morse is part of this so I'm expecting a good record.

I saw the top of Portnoy's hat when I clicked to the UG front page, and wasn't sure what to think...

Hope this will make Adrenaline Mob disband, it was such a huge letdown. This doesn't sound that bad after all

The whole irony of all of this Portnoy stuff is that Mike wanted to take a break for a year or so, and DT didn't want to. Then instead of leaving and taking a break, he leaves and gets going so quickly on making sure people remember that he still exists and keeps trying to make new bands and an album.

He's a drummer, musicians always take longer.

For a man who left his previous band because they couldn't take some time off from recording or touring, Portnoy sure is doing a lot of recording and touring.

Pop/Prog is that something like being a man and a woman at the same time?

Thats the reason that he wanted a break

It's funny isn't it? If I recall correctly he was whining and crying about needing a break from recording and touring.

So... he's trying out a bunch of new bands to see which one sells most so he can stick with them? Crazy talk.

They got over it quickly!? You must have missed the months and months of them dragging their feet through drummer auditions, all the while crying about how hard it would be to replace Portnoy. They had their chance to get him back but they turned it down... and still complained about him not being in the band!

They're not British and they don't try to make everything sound French (If you know your history, you'll know that the British got the idea of putting a "u" in words ending with "or" from Anglo-French).

No, he wanted a break from touring with Dream Theater so he could work on other projects. I hope this turns out well. Steve Morse is an awesome guitar player so I hope he has a lot of input in this project. Although Mike Portnoy is a good song writer, I've always thought he was a bit overrated as a drummer.

Wait, isn't this the guy that wanted a 5 year hiatus last year when he was with Dream Theater? lol

I bet Portnoy will set the record for Most New Album Debuts in the course of 2 years.

    Easily.

And another supergroupe for portnoy! Personally, I think it's getting quite cheesy. These bands never live up to the hype.

I'm really sick of Portnoy at this point. He's like that kid in highschool that wants to be friends with everyone, gets his feelings constantly hurt, is and then constantly trying to 'show the world!' He's a talented guy, but he's so annoying.

this project was announced and completed long long ago. keep up with the news before bad mouthing about him dragging things so long after that whole DT drama. and this ain't just about portnoy. it's about all these amazing musicians making something different jeez. up to the hype or not, be the judge of that after not before hearing the product. you guys are the ones who are dwelling in the past you hypocrites.

He left DT because the other four guys wouldn't put the band on hiatus so he could play with Avenged Sevenfold more.

How old is Steve Morse? Then again, Mike is in the better part of his 50s I believe anyways.
