Legendary producer Butch Vig recently gave a studio update on his current projects, confirming that the production of the new Foo Fighters record should be done by the end of June.

Chatting with KROQ, Vig also shared a rough time schedule for the new Garbage album, saying, "I'm hoping to finish the Foos by the end of June and probably go back into the studio and finish the Garbage album by Thanksgiving.

"Next year is going to be a big year for Garbage," he added. "It's our 20th anniversary. So, there'll be a big tour and a new album and some other special things that we're working on to sort of celebrate our anniversary."

Getting back to the Foos, Butch pointed out the unprecedented approach previously mentioned several times by frontman Dave Grohl. "We’ve taken an approach that is quite different," he said. "I've never made a record like this. I don't know anyone who has.

"We sort of threw an x-factor into the process that is forcing all of us to be spontaneous as well as really have to be on your a-game. So it's been a challenge and fun," the producer concluded.

As excited as I am to hear the new foo and learn what the big secret technique is, I am getting sick of hearing everyone just repeat the same lines "it's never been done like this", "it's gonna blow you away", etc. TELL ME WHAT IT IS ALREADY DAVE OR JUST PUT OUT THE FREAKING RECORD

I logged in to say same exact thing. These aren't updates for the new record is just a carrot on a string, keeping me engaged. And if that's the idea, they're doing a good job

Does that mean the album will be out by June? Or they'll be finished by June and it'll be out in like September? Also, they really better follow through with this "brand new insane technique" they keep talking about. Really setting the bar high and they are being extremely secretive.

It would be kinda funny if it ended up being something like "We recorded the entire album while hanging upsidedown!"

Improvised? "Spontaneous as well as really have to be on your A-game". Just a thought...

Many bands have improvised on their records. Most solos by bands like the experience and Zeppelin were completely improvised. Moe. released their cd "the conch" which is an integration of a live show and studio recordings. Im still waiting for whatever this thing is that has "never been done before." I hope its ****in cool!

Spontaneity and being on your A-game doesn't necessarily mean improvised. I feel like it's the same approach Jack White uses: fly in musicians from around the world for one day and only have 24 hours in the studios to come up with something great. You basically paint yourself in a corner where there's so much pressure and urgency not to fail that your inspired to work 4 times is hard to be on you 'A Game' when the day comes. It's drawing inspiration from fear and when your as successful and wealthy as Dave Grohl and Jack White I'm thinking it's pretty starts to get pretty hard to draw any emotion or inspiration from a frustrating or dark place so you have to force yourself into one. True artists in my opinion.

As much as I appreciate the Foo's for what they do and stand for... I really really want some new Them Vultures tunes !!

As cool of a guy Dave Grohl is, and as solid as a rock band Foo Fighters are, they're really not THAT innovative of a band. I mean, what could this band actually do that is as innovative as they make everything out to be? I'm a fan of them too, but they kind of are what they are... a straight forward rock band. I'd love for them to prove me wrong, but they haven't strayed too far from that path yet, so we'll see...

I think the point isn't so much that the music itself is going to try to innovate so much as the way they wrote/recorded it is innovative (at least allegedly). After all, their music doesn't need to innovate anyway. They're some of the best around at what they do and I don't think they have any honest intention of changing that

I don't see how they, or anyone else, is claiming that the Foo's are such an innovative band, no one is saying that. They are however saying that they are recording an album in an innovative way.

Foo Fighters album will be finished in June?! My birthday is in June! Is that the surprise?! Am I getting a concept album about me released on my birthday?! C'mon Foos! Do it! ...Please...? lol

My birthday too is in June! Therefore I'm expecting AT LEAST one use of the word "bellend" on the album.

My guess is that they're writing each new song on the spot, in a new studio each time.

I really hope they do it it Studio 606. I want to hear a Foo record through the Neve console that Dave bought last year
    joelroberts1
They recorded Wasting Light on the Neve console.
    Suitemike
I don't think they did. Im pretty sure Dave didn't buy the Neve until late 2011 or 2012. And Wasting Light came out in April of 2011.I think the Sound City soundtrack is the only full album they've recorded with it yet.
    Everlong729
Wasting Light was recorded on this tiny console like 2 maybe 3 feet wide. Idk what it was, but it wasn't as nice as the Neve
    Hoboform
That wouldn't be new. Paul McCartney did that on a record a few years ago.

They recorded an album to tape in his garage....did it really sound that much different than some of their other albums? I can't imagine what they would be doing that is so crazy....maybe recording in an empty concert hall or something like that? I always thought that would be cool. Not sure what hasn't been done yet.

Sonically it really did. It still sounded like the Foos, but better, fuller, more analog.
    Danjo's Guitar
I'm a big fan of analog equipment, but "It sounded more analog" is not a great way of explaining how something sounded better.
