Thrash masters Testament are looking to kick off the writing process of their new album earlier next year, frontman Chuck Billy recently confirmed.

As Billy told Rock Overdose, the band's latest studio effort, 2012's "Dark Roots of Earth," is a "real representation of Testament." Therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the group intends to stay on the same course.

"We are going to start writing and recording early next year," the singer said. "It think that January to April, we're gonna start writing and recording, so the new album will be out next year."

He explained further, "I think that we're on the right direction with the 'Dark Roots Of Earth.' I think that the old saying 'If it's not broken, don't fix it' fits, so we're probably going to stick with the same formula and idea. I think that there isn't any Testament album that sounds the same, so who knows what kind of songs we'll write next year... I don't know."

Prior to hitting the studio, Testament will release "Dark Roots of Thrash" live album on October 15 through Nuclear Blast Records. Recorded during the band's latest tour, the effort was announced with "Rise Up" performance clip. Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Damn that sounds awesome! Dark Roots of Earth was the best true thrash album since Megadeth's Endgame

I think you mean, "...IS the best true thrash album since...".

Not really, if anyone is gonna release a decent thrash record these days, its totally them. "Is" only applies up until their next record

That being said, if Testament release a really, really good thrash record before Metallica finally releases something, I will be losing quite a lot of faith in the latter band.

Personally I think formation of damnation was slightly better, but a win for everyone!

Death Angel - Relentless Retribution? Their new album is looking like it's going to be fantastic as well.

I'm glad to see Testament staying as a CONSISTENT THRASH band these days, unlike others....

finally a band that isn't releasing radio friendly metal or re releasing old songs via movies and focusing on one key factor..making "NEW" heavy music.

As much as I liked Formation of Damnation, Dark Roots of the Earth was even better. Hopefully they can keep coming out with great albums. I'm really excited for it. I'm also curious if Alex Skolnick is going to come out with any new music for his trio too.

"New Testament Record Coming in 2014" sounds to me like someone is bringing out an audiobook of the bible...

I read this as if theres a record of the new testament coming out. I was mislead!!

The album cover should be Chuck Billy jerking off his microphone stand like he does during live shows
    GMPX
Usually he perfectly mimics the guitar solos on his mic stand.

It actually bothers me that he does that crap. It looks like he might actually be able to play guitar, a little bit atleast, but he's perfectly content with looking like a retard DERP A DER A DERP AIR GUITAR WHOOOOO!
    guitgrinder
so you've never mimicked a guitar riff or solo while standing in your bedroom or whatever? gimme a break. he's the singer. he doesn't play guitar in the band, so what's he supposed to do? stand there & jerk off to the solo? some of you people out there are a tad too critical, y'know?
