RHCP Enter Studio to Record New Album, Post Video Update

Guys are jammin', "being creative, coming up with ideas."

Ultimate Guitar

Following drummer Chad Smith's confirmation that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are working on a new album, the first video to show the gang getting it on in the studio has surfaced.

Not exactly a colossal update, but the clip clearly shows Chad, Flea and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer busy in the studio, writing, grooving and head-bopping to the cropped-up piece of music in the background.

"It's only been a couple of months, so we're just starting to write and get in the groove of things," Smith previously told Billboard. "This is my favorite time, being creative, coming up with ideas. You go there at 11 o'clock with something that wasn't a piece of music, everyone collaborates on something, three hours later you've got something that's a piece of music that wasn't there before."

Although the specific musical direction still remains unknown, Chad noted that the group is "always trying to change and grow and do new stuff. So we don't make the record that we made three years ago, we're gonna make something different. And you never know what that is going to be."

The band's latest studio effort, "I'm With You," saw its release in August 2011 via Warner Bros.

    Hopefully Josh is more prominent
Agreed. He's a good guitarist, but confidence is an issue when he's playing with the big boys. I thought he had an annoying habit on the last album of hiding behind Chad and Flea, hoping he comes out of his shell more this time around
I always got the feeling that the last album was like a half-way release. With Josh joining, the sound was obviously going to change slightly so they opted for a transitional period, whereas this release should hopefully see him in full flow. That's what I'm hoping!
When John left the first time they replaced with a guitarist who played live well but they didn't mesh with in the studio (I think it was Arik Marshall, or Jesse Tobias). With Josh they went the other way round and made sure they could write well with him before playing shows. However this means Josh's confidence and the chemistry was still brand new on the album. These 3 years should show a really great transformation, the IWY sessions that they did last year and the year before were 10x better than IWY in my opinion.
Thought you were on about Dave Navarro. Always forget they had two touring guitarists before Navarro joined the band
To be fair I'd be intimidated by if nothing else that they've been doing it so much longerI mean Josh was like 5 when their very first album came out. Hopefully he's got more confident and bring something interesting to the table. I'm praying for a hybrid of Mother's Milk and One Hot Minute
There's a combination I'd really like to see. I'd also hope for more of Josh's backing vocals, he sang like an angel on I'm With You (Annie Wants a Baby was f*ing beautiful!)
I'd think that has more to do with how they mixed the album. Seen them live on that tour and Josh was incredibly kickass and entertaining.
I saw them in on tour for the first time in South Carolina and he was way into it, moving around a lot etc, but a few months later at Orion Fest, he came back with that same energy and had a lot more time with his improvising and solos. I'm really hoping that shows how he's going to approach playing on this album. He's even said himself that he wasn't used to being in a lead guitarist position when he joined the band. Hopefully he's more used to it by now
we've heard what he's capable of on tracks like brave from afar, meet me at the corner, did i let you know and, of course, this is the kitt, as well as how solid he is live; hopefully with this new album, well get a load of josh's brilliant guitar licks & backing vocals as well as the stuff flea, chad & anthony contribute!
First line form Ethiopia ' Good morning everyone, it starts with bass.' describes the whole album
Fuck yeah, I have faith that the Chili Peppers' next album is going to slay. Josh Klinghoffer has gotten more comfortable playing with them, so I feel like he'll take a more dominant role on this album compared to their last. I'm With You wasn't bad at all, I like it, but they can do better. BRING THE FUNK.
If you've seen any of their live jam sessions (which they have a couple of EVERY TIME THEY PLAY LIVE) you can see that over a little bit of time Josh Klinghoffer has turned into a monster guitarist
There is no basis of comparison between Josh and John. Two completely different guitarists. John was an integral part of their sound for two decades. Imagine walking into that scenario and trying to become a part of that sound. Most people don't appreciate it much. He's as smooth and fluid a guitarist as any out there right now. Looking forward to this.
i like bands that are consistent because they have great sounds but RHCP is an example of a band that sounds different in every album and sound great at the same time. a lot of bands can't do that
Really excited to hear what's in store for this one! I'm With You was great, but it would've been nice to hear Josh a bit more.
I'm with you was so conservative. Flea needs to be cut loose and they need to let Josh stand prominent in the backing vocals and with his guitar work.
This is going to a a fantastic album, I can feel it. that clip only gave me great feels. I'm looking forward to it with open arms.
    Two words: JOHN FRUSCIANTE
Unless you want 15 mins of elevator music, modem tones, and spazzy drums then you don't want John Frusciante. There's a reason he left the band
they've done one song thats lasted 30 years :s it all sounds the same.
Come on they are one of the band that change the most over the years ... RHCP the same as BSSM ? The same as californication ? The same as I'm With You ?
I feel like the last album only just came out... maybe I've slipped into a Tool scale of album time
I see an acoustic in the studio, that's a great sight since many of their great songs were written on one
