Sonic Youth Start Work On New Album

Sonic Youth are set to begin work on their 17th studio album. The follow-up to this year's "The Eternal", guitarist Lee Ranaldo has confirmed that they're "most probably going back into the studio next year", but did add that the band were still enjoying playing their current album live. "We're still deeply ensconced in our new record, so we're gonna play a lot of 'The Eternal'," Ranaldo told BBC 6 Music, "that's what we're having the most fun with." In the meantime the band are also planning a DVD release, combining footage from their recent 2007/2008 "Daydream Nation" tour, as well as footage of them playing the classic album back in 1988. As for future releases, Ranaldo revealed plans to digitise over 30 years of the band's recordings. "We're doing a big archival house clean right now," he explained. "We've got a massive archive of audio and video that's sitting in our studio in Hoboken. We've got somebody in there who's noting every single thing down and making a massive database, and then we're going to start digitising it because some of the tapes are 30 years old now." Thanks for the report to Nme.com.

When they reach the milestone of 20 albums (man, can't believe it's almost been that many) they should release 8 singles, set up a ridiculously expensive light show and dress up like KISS, do a world tour with Lady Gaga and Beyonce, start gossiping about each other so they make the tabloids, adopt 3 babies each, buy a few of Nicholas Cage's houses and throw parties that rival the ones at the Playboy Mansion, start wearing diamond grills, put 20" rims on all their vehicles including their children's bikes, start spitting on their fans and cussing at them because they're "not hardcore enough" then leave the stage until they form a mosh pit, make sure their live repertoire consists of ONLY Billy Jean by Michael Jackson played over and over again, even as an encore, play every TV gig they can like the Teen Choice Awards and ESPECIALLY the mimed ones like Top of the Pops... Then release album #21 and act like nothing happened

I hope they come out to Australia on the tour for this album, when they came out for the Daydream Nation re-tour in 2007 it was an over-eighteens gig and I couldn't see them and they haven't come out since. Yeah anyway, The Eternal was a great album, like at first it was like "woah it's different, it sounds more commercial" and that it didn't have that "the songs keep getting better" feel but like after six months it just suddenly hits you how good The Eternal was. Anyway, definitely looking forward to this.

I'm even more excited for the DVD than I am for the album. I saw them live not too long ago. What an amazing performance.

I love Sonic Youth so much. I want them to come into the Nebraska area sometime. They are still one of the best bands that no one has heard of.

Yay! I'll never get sick of this band. They've never dissapointed me. That's the beauty of bands that don't try and appeal to the mainstream.

Thought their last album was kind of boring, but that won't stop me from listening to their next one. And hey, more chances to see them live hopefully.

Great news!! Can't wait!! The Eternal (like all their albums) was great so I'm sure that they're next album will be the same.

I'm actually more excited about the fact that sometime in the near future (after they sort out all those archives and digitise them) there will be some nice b-sides and unrealeased material available

Awesome. Sonic Youth is my second favorite band and one of my biggest influences. Saw them live in July and it was one of the greatest shows of my life. Very glad to hear this.
