The band recently said goodbye to longtime friend and band vocalist Jimmy Ryan, whose final show at the Knights of Columbus in Indianapolis, IN was an amazing night for all. The crowd was more than lively and emotions ran high as the night erupted. Jimmy left the band gracefully and ended his career with Haste the Day, by far, with his best performance ever. The sold out crowd's energy was felt and heard as their voices over powered the band throughout the night. Expect to see a DVD of the show to surface later this year. Now, Haste the Day welcomes Stephen Keech, from Denver, to take on the lead vocal spot on their current European tour; then in the U S this February with the group as they set out on the Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Between The Buried And Me. HTD's new release, "When Everything Falls" (6/05) has currently sold more than 40,000 copies in the U S alone and is primed to excel with the exposure the band will receive from the next few months of hard work touring around the globe. "When Everything Falls" is so much more than a metalcore record; with more thought and better execution than many bands in the scene. It's the succinct songwriting, those unforgettable choruses that you'll find yourself singing days after you've shut the record off, and the positive energy that give Haste The Day a leg up in the scene. Ultimately, When Everything Falls is a record that will remain standing. The current metalcore scene is often volatile and chaotic, from the music, to the live shows, to lineups of the bands that constitute this scene. The scene remains in an exciting yet constant state of growth, motion and movement, and is full of unpredictability and passion from the fans as well as the bands. Indianapolis quintet Haste The Day, a band that loves to play music in front of both Christian and secular audiences fits like a glove. Partly thanks to the stormily passionate music on their sophomore effort, "When Everything Falls," which has moments of breakdown-filled bluster, tempered by beautiful, well-written melodies, layered vocal harmonies; and catchy choruses that lodge themselves into your brain for days at a time. But, HTD are hardly a band that fits some pre-designed mold. They go beyond it, and pride themselves on being original. For one thing, they've been a stable, synchronized, and tight knit bunch of clean cut rock dudes since their formation. Band guitarist Brennan Chaulk relects, "Mike and I were best friends who met in 8th grade, and knew we wanted to play music together. We started taking it seriously, and writing heavier stuff. Devon was at college, but he'd come on weekends and jam with us, and we ended up with the core of the band. Sure, HTD music is tightly crafted and well-constructed on "When Everything Falls" having as much Swedish death metal influence as it does shimmery pop influence. Going through the album, HTD expounds on key tracks. The title track sums up the vibe of the entire album, saying, "It's about standing up for what you believe in, even when that's the hardest thing to do. It encourages you to not fall over in any part of your life, and to stay strong." The song "The Perfect Night" is "about a boy and a girl in love, and it's a fun song that a lot of people can relate to," Chaulk explains. "It's almost got an adventurous feel. It's different than anything we've ever done." The track "If I Could See" is a song reminded oneself to "not get distracted by everything out there than can distract you. It's an encouraging song," the guitarist says. "Walk On" was the second song HTD wrote for the album, and "it's about different things in our lives that we're not going to take anymore," Chaulk reveals. "We say, 'Walk on past / Never say my name again.' It's about completely getting rid of something in our lives that we don't want anymore." There's robust gang vocals on the end of "For A Lifetime," which give the song a fraternal, communal feel. Memebrs of HTD and From Autumn To Ashes, who were recording at the same time, contributed the vocals, which HTD believe will have the kids in the pits at their live shows singing along to. When Everything Falls also features a cover of "Long Way Down" by the pop rock act Goo-Goo Dolls. There's no real rhyme or reason as to why HTD chose this song other than it brought back a lot of memories for the members, especially Chaulk, who used to hear it on the radio all the time when he moved down from Canada.
