Shamed 1980s rock star Gary Glitter
appears to have announced a comeback tour on Twitter.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd
, was a glam rock star with 20 million record sales to his name. He was convicted of possession of child pornography in 1999, and served four months in prison. Upon his release, he moved to Vietnam where he was convicted of further child sexual abuse offences.
Tweeting under the username OfficialGlitter
, he announced: "2012 comeback tour details coming here soon. Watch this space!
His name quickly rose to the top of the global Twitter trend list, with many users posting their disgust at his crimes. Perhaps unusually, he also received many messages of support from fans who just wanted to see him perform again.
"I want to put my past behind me and focus on my music,
" he later said. "Thank you for your messages of support.
The account says it is in the process of being verified, though a recent accident at Twitter HQ left a fake account for Rupert Murdoch
's wife Wendi Deng
to be verified, throwing the reputation of the official badge into disrepute.
If the claims are true, then Glitter could be set to return with a new tour, remastered album and book. Whether anyone wants to be seen buying his products is another matter.
