Ultimate Guitar

Avenged Sevenfold have emerged as the big winners at this year's Revolver Golden Gods Awards ceremony, fetching a total of three prizes out of 12 categories.

Axemen Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance took home the Dimebag Darrell Best Guitarist(s) award, triumphing over Tony Iommi, John Petrucci and Jerry Cantrell. Drummer Arin Ilejay received the Best Drummer title, winning it over the likes of Mike Portnoy, Chris Adler and Brad Wilk.

In the rest of the categories, Queens of the Stone Age mainman John Homme reeled in the Best Vocalist award, Black Sabbath's "13" was proclaimed Album of the Year, Chris Kael of Five Finger Death Punch was dubbed Best Bassist, while the band's "Lift Me Up" tune was awarded Song of the Year.

During the rest of the ceremony, Joan Jett received the Golden God Award and Guns N' Roses mainman Axl Rose was honored with Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. GN'R featuring bassist Duff McKagan then graced the stage for a not-too-stellar performance that instantly caught the negative attention of the crowd. FFDP Best song of the year.. my god.But when you see the other nominees for this category, there's no one to help the others Best drummer : Chris Adler, Mike Portnoy,... ARIN ILEJAY IT IS! for his awesome technical late release with Avenged Sevenfold
Seriously! Should've been Portnoy. And best guitarists, Zacky and Synyster? I mean, I love A7X, but they aren't that great of guitarists. The solos are like always in the same key. Nowhere near the likes of John Petrucci and Tommy Iommi.
To be honest I think Matt Halpern is way better than these drummers. I would've had Matt Gartska and Anup Salstry on that list too they are incredible.
did you see "Dimebag Darrell Best Guitarist(s) "? JP is great , but JP is different from Dimebag Darrel, Tommy Iommi is the Father of Heavy Metal guitar right? So impossible Tommy Iommi is same as Dimebag Darrel
Who the **** is Tommy Iommi?
I don't understand all the downvotes you're getting. UG readers have a tendency of getting carried away in the heat of the moment.
Being a good drummer isn't always about being the most technical with you playing, Arin has proved he is capable of that with previous Avenged Sevenfold releases. A sign of a good drummer is when they know they're restrictions and they don't just play as fast as they can or as technical as they can.
Being a drummer, you are absolutely right. It's about when to play, not just what to play. BUT, Arin won this because he is in Sevenfold, not because of his skills/performances. This award show is an embarrassment to heavy music.. SO poorly put together, presented, and voted on.
He was told to play not technical, several videos prove that his band members didn't want the Sullivan-ish fills that he was proposing. He played a monotonic drumming, ok it fits the songs but he don't deserve at all the title of best drummer, with names like Portnoy or Adler who released, to me, way better work, this is clearly out of context.
I always knew Syn was good but man, this and the other vid where he improvises Django Reinhardt's Minor Swing made me respect the guy even more.
Ohh shieeet. I have always considered him as great guitarist, but after watching this... He's little underrated. Yea, i know, maybe he won this award, but just read some comments here.
i think the real disappointment is best bassist going to Chris Kael over Geezer ****ing Butler! i loooove Five Finger Death Punch (ya ya bring the down votes for that) but he is not in any way shape or form a better bass player than Geezer, no disrespect to him
Yea totally agree. Geezer should have gotten best bassist, and tony iommi should have got best guitarist...
I'm surprised Josh Homme won for Best Vocalist, because Revolver's audience probably wouldn't find QOTSA to be "br00talz" enough.
I love the fact that they're afraid to put Rammstein back on the best live band nomination, since last time they completely knocked it outta the park. And they can do it every single year...
This is true. It's cool to see bands like Dillinger Escape Plan and Gojira in that category as well though.
Say what you will about Hail to the King, but nobody can deny the spectacular guitar work from Synyster Gates. Overall, "13" should have won best album, and Iommi should've been honoured for beating cancer. I am so sick of people hating on A7X who think their fans are "12 year old fanboys." They rock! You will never be as good as them, so deal with it! I'm 23 years old by the way, and been listening to them for a decade. Fuck the haters.
Chris Kael of Five Finger Death Punch was dubbed Best Bassist Yeah, he's gotten pretty great at playing the same thing every song.
I'm leaving Mayhemfest after Korn plays. I'm not watching as A7X headlines.
How the heck could synyster gates win an award over tony iommi? I mean don't get me wrong syn is an AWSOME player, player but iommi should have recieved the best guitarist award...
I don't hate A7X but come the **** on, to say that he's a better drummer than Chris adler, Matt halpern and Mike portnoy is ****ing pants on head retarded. Glad twelve foot ninja won something ,though.
"John" Homme? Way to almost make QOTSA sound like they are fronted by a former pornstar!
The Golden Gods is the one award show (in America anyway) that actually pays attention to the rock/metal world. And now everyone's hating it because it became cool to start hating A7X and 5FDP this year. On that note, Kael should not have gotten Best Bassist and Ilejay should not have gotten Best Drummer. He can play Jimmy's stuff note for note, but A7X told him to play simple beats on the album. So as of yet, he has done nothing award-worthy.
I think Iommi or Munky/Head should've taken the Dime award. If they're using his name in an award, it should also be judged in his likeness. I know he dug Sabbath. Halpbern should've had best drummer by far. And then Crosses... Why not Crosses?!
