"Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe has denied rumors that he's set to play Freddie Mercury in the forthcoming Queen movie.

His name came up as the band revealed that they wanted to cancel Sacha Baron Cohen from playing the role. "We felt Sacha probably wasn't right in the end. We didn't want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved," said Queen drummer Roger Taylor this week.

Now Radcliffe has set the record straight (via NME):

"Everyone on the internet who I presume is saying I'm totally wrong for that part is correct," he said. "I AM completely wrong for that part!"

He continued: "If I'd seen a rumour about me playing Iggy Pop, I'd think, 'Hey, I'd have a go at that – that'd be fun!', but Freddie Mercury? No. I don't even know who the director is."

Meanwhile, the Queen movie is pressing ahead without a named actor in its lead role, but the band are growing impatient with progress.

"I thought the music business was slow, but this has been like swimming in treacle," said Taylor.

I can't think of a single reason to dislike Radcliffe as a person, but I'm glad even he's in agreement that he'd be terrible for the role.

Yeah the harry potter cast in general did a pretty good job of being popular child actors and not going batshit when they're older.

From hearing about the direction the film seems to be going in, I'd actually rather they did some ludicrous casting. Then we could laugh about it at least.

dont like how he said it though, seems like he thinks that Mercury isn't cool or something compared to iggy pop, and he's being a snob about the director...btw he would look even more ridiculous playing iggy pop than Freddie Mercury imo

Love Roger Taylor but he's out of his mind if he thinks Sacha wasn't good for that role. I was so bummed when I heard he wasn't going to be in it. Oh, and Daniel Radcliffe? That's not even an acceptable rumor.

Sacha said they were planning on largely ignoring his sexuality, which is why he didn't want to do it. They seem to want to portray some kind of PG Freddie, when it's not true. I guess time will tell.

Sounds like Sacha. I think he would take any role where he got to be openly gay. Probably thought it was a no-brainer and then got disappointed because he didn't get to be gay enough.

I think it would have been too hard to ignore his well known comedic roles and see him as Freddie which is what Taylor and the others were concerned about. And although i think Cohen is a great comedic actor i have no idea how good of a dramatic actor he is.

Like Bryan Cranston says, if you can handle comedy, you can handle anything. And he knows his shit

Next week's article headline: "Daniel Radcliffe set to play Iggy Pop in new film" Actual article: "Radcliffe says playing as Iggy Pop would be fun"

Didn't want the film to be a joke if Sacha played Freddie? Sacha may be a comedian but he is very talented. He was perfect for this role but they wanted the film to be family friendly whilst Sacha wanted to look deeper into Mercury's life. Sacha can play serious as well as comedy

Yeah I thought that HE left the role and the reason for doing so is the reasons that they are stating.

I think Roger said that because he was put off by Sacha's comment about the movie being PG.

I thought Cohen would of been perfect for it. They do have slight similarities in appearance already and Sacha is a great actor, i'm sure he isn't just limited to comedy. I guess if Queen say he isn't suitable, we just have to take their word on it. But i think he was a great choice to start with.

I had actually wanted to see Sacha Baren Cohen do a serious role for once and completely surpass everyone's expectations...oh well.

I've been a Queen fan my whole life and was really looking forward to it when i heard Sacha was going to play Freddie. I'm absolutely sure he would've done a great job portraying him. But Roger can only think of him playing funny roles? Pull your head out of your ass man!

Honestly, I don't really care about this movie anymore. No Cohen = no good movie. I mean, nobody's perfect, but he would've been fantastic playing Fred. Roger and Bri won't find anyone who would fit better or at least as good as Cohen.

Not often do we find a celebrity of his age aware of his shortcomings. Somehow, I have hope for his career. But Iggy Pop ? David Bowie, perhaps

Honestly, as much as I would've enjoyed a gritty Queen movie. Freddie himself was intensely private, and the band was very protective of him, especially when he was sick. I've watched interviews with Roger Taylor saying how angry he was at the press trying to pry their way into Freddie's life, I think thats the reason why they dont want to focus on his sexuality. I guess they want the movie to be about Freddie and the band, not just who he screwed.

look at that handsome portrait..... and I wouldn't be taking it as a joke if Sacha Baron Cohen. People can take him seriously.

I like Daniel Radcliffe a lot. I think he's a great actor... but this wasn't the role for him.
