Dave Grohl on Nirvana's Hall of Fame Induction: 'For Once, I'm Speechless'

"From the basements ... to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," says Foo Fighters frontman.

Ultimate Guitar

Following the announcement of Nirvana's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Dave Grohl couldn't contain the excitement as he posted a brief comment regarding the prestigious honor. "For once ... I'm speechless," said Foo Fighters mainman and Nirvana's former drummer. "From the basements, to the dingy clubs, to the broken down vans, to… the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. "I'd like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock and roll," Dave noted (via Blabbermouth). "Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock and roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist, without whom I would not be here today." Bassist Krist Novoselic chipped in, adding, "This is a great honor. Thank you to the people who nominated and voted for us. Thank you most of all to Kurt Cobain. And to everyone who's kept rock music going strong for 60 years and counting." Nirvana are scheduled to be inducted on April 10 ceremony Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York alongside KISS, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Cat Stevens, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt, Andrew Loog Oldham and Brian Epstein.

Well deserved. Now for Alice in Chains and Soundgarden!!!
And, off the top of my head, Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Gary Moore, Scorpions, Pantera, Megadeth... + of course, Deep Purple and Yes who were nominated this year, but didn't get in.
The fact that Kiss got in before Yes pisses me off greatly.
The fact KISS got in before any of those bands pisses me off
the fact that kiss got in pisses me off
    King Crimson, too
The day King Crimson is inducted into the "rock n roll hall of fame" I will eat my shorts! Genesis and Yes both took a turn for the commercial which helped them promote their names despite the loss of quality musicianship. Crimson on the other hand hasn't veered too much from the path.
When is Pearl Jam eligible? How about some Blind Melon? No? ok...
before Deep Purple, Motorhead, Judas Priest and Ronnie James Dio? That would make me kind of sad.
I honestly think Alice in Chains should have went in before Nirvana. Not saying that both shouldn't be in, I just think Alice laid the groundwork a little more nicely.
Don't they usually nominate bands that are already disbanded? It's a genuine question, I'm not sure how it works. If so, it's understandable that those two are still to be nominated. But with Alice and Soundgarden it's just a matter of time, both bands will end up in the Hall of Fame, that's a given.
You're eligible 25 years after your first release, so the vast majority of bands are defunct by then. Who they nominate depends on who is in the committee every year and they are notoriously erratic with their nominations. I am relatively certain that if there was no fan vote that KISS would not have gotten in.
Soundgarden's been eligible for 2 turns now - I fear they will become the next Rush [that is until Tool becomes eligble...]
I wonder how long we have until Courtney shows up on UG voicing her rebuttal to Dave's gracious comments.
Plus the subliminal messages hidden with that say "I want money. I want money. I want money. I want money. I want money."
SO happy for Dave and Krist. As much as Kurt didn't like this kind of stuff, I'm sure he would have felt honored in some way too. Can't wait to see you guys on stage (with Pat please?)
    What about Chad?
Absolutely, he played on Bleach, and going by the RNRHOF rules, he should be in. As should Eric Carr, Bruce Kulick, TOmmy Thayer, Eric Singer and Vinnie Vincent with Kiss.
You forgot Mark St. John and to be technical, Bob Kulick as well. But I mention Bob more so to be funny than anything else.
You can't not like Dave. And Nirvana deserve this one, well done.
One step closer to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame being less of a joke.
Poor Chad Channing. Most likely not going in
Not necessarily I mean Cliff, Jason and Rob were all inducted for Metallica. Even Sid Vicious got inducted for the Sex Pistols but wtf did he do for the band apart from stand there and look cool?
He was a band member on a recorded album so he should be included. Hopefully he will be invited to the induction, but I have my doubts. Its the reason Mustaine wasn't included in the Metallica honors. He never recorded an album with them.
Jack Sherman and Dave Navarro didn't get in with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, neither did Gilby Clarke with Guns N Roses (although that's a whole different ball game)It seems the RnR HoF pick and choose depending on scenarios
The bands pretty much decide who's going to be there, not the HoF.
So why wasn't Mustaine inducted with Metallica (who quit the feud before they were inducted)? They said because HoF said that he wasn't on a record (although he was, because his songs were).
James Hetfield himself said on Metallica's induction the only members going in were ones who recorded an album in the band, its possible its only completely on the band then the HoF.
He might! All of the old and new guys from the Chili Peppers got in... and that's a lot of band members haha
congrats Nirvana. But can I point out that I think its a real tragedy that newer bands and people like "LL Cool Jay" are now getting nominations, while motorhead, Judas Priest and even Iron maiden are routinely overlooked, despite the fact that they are LIVING ROCK GODS.
Glad to see Nirvana seat their rightful place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cobain and co. revolutionized the musical landscape and Smells Like Teen Spirit became the anthem of a generation.
i dont think it matters that Nirvana got in the RnR hall of fame.If they didnt would that mean people would hear their songs less? Or recognise their influence in rock music less?Im a huge fan but i cant give a **** about hall of fames..
You know, I was the target group for Nirvana back when they were new, and Kurt was alive. Everyone in my class talked non-stop about them. I was too busy listening to Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Lightning Hopkins. And I still have never listed to Nirvana. I think I'm going to buy one of their albums.
I'm actually sad that The replacements didn't get inducted - They were essential for alternative rock (or College-rock as it was known in the day), and though they aren't as big as Nirvana, KISS, or the others that didn't make it (Yes, Deep Purple), they rocked just as hard, and have written some fantastic albums. That said, I'm still happy that Nirvana made it, after all, their legacy is undeniable - I also hope that Chad Channings contributions to their early days also will be acknowledged at this event...
I would like to see Chad, however if they let Chad in I think they should also let Pat in.
I thought Pat was only made a member during the In Utero tour while Chad played on Bleach? It would be totally acceptable if Chad was included and not Pat although I'd prefer that they both were included.
If they play at the event, I'm imagining that Kurt-wannabe Shaun Morgan begging Dave and Co to sing for them. Pretty much covered every Nirvana song going at Seether shows by now anyway
He does do a pretty good job though
Agreed, he probably is the best choice if they're going to try and fill in for a vocalist.
he's not. they should get the russian dude who sings in the subway. search youtube "Russian Kurt Cobain(About a girl)"
Although it would be a disgrace to kurt to let anyone impersonate him, I find this video pretty nicely done. Jared Leto / Kurt Cobain
They should get the guy from Deer Tick. They constantly cover Nirvana songs as Deervana.
i never knew of deervana... thanks. Ive liked deer tick, but have a whole new respect now.
How come no one says dave should sing? The obvious choice
I love Dave and all but he's not Kurt. He will never BE Kurt. He may sound similar to him, but at the end of the day it would NEVER be the same without him. If he sang on like one or two songs for their induction I'd be fine but other than that just....no. Also if they have him sing they need to get Chad in drumming since he was on Nirvana's first album. So they line-up would be: Dave - vocals/guitar Krist - bass Chad - drums
I don't think anybody meant Dave should replace Kurt but that he sing for the R&R HOF =.
    Hologram Kurt?
I really think the Hall of Fame should lower the criteria for eligibility to 15 years and allow more people in every year.
    Year Zero
Alice in Chains deserved it before Nirvana in my opinion.
Congrats to possibly THE most overrated rock band of all time! They ushered in plad, dirty jeans, and sloppy hair. They are also responsible for starting an entire genre that made it "uncool' to be skilled at your instrument. Nirvana single handedly ruined the guitar solo and destroyed heavy metal, making the 90's the worst decade of music ever! They ruined the fun that was rock n roll and catered to teenagers who were pissed that their parents divorced. They are also a classic example of having 1 album do great, thus allowing their fans to pardon their other shitty work. Worst of all, they spawned countless copy cats and made the radio airwaves worthless for 10 years. I despise everything that Nirvana stands for, represents and is. they were cool when i was 12, but if you cant realize they are NOT a timeless band, then your no friend of mine! Now all 30 yr olds start flaming me and unleash your grunge war while simultaneously singing all your vowels..... YOU CAN'T KILL HEAVY METAL!
Don't worry. At least your band will never play on the radio (or have even a single fan)!
Go away please. No one cares that you don't like Nirvana. You don't need to bash a band that people love just so you can feel better about yourself. Grow the **** up.
Wow your not bright. 1 album did great. I guess incesticide didn't have decent sales for only being a b sides album. I guess in utero was unsuccessful. Not to mention having one of the best selling unplugged albums ever makes you a one album wonder. Not to mention post death, from the muddy banks and if I remember correctly the greatest hits went number. If that's not enough, it only took 3-4 months for their box set to brake record sales for a box set. Tell me there total sales and then realize the 27-30 million sales nevermind is at is only a fraction of the total albums they sold. Also please quit bitching about 90's music when judging by your memory you weren't even old enough to remember. Cc and the music factory, mc hammer, milli vanilli, sir mix a lot. ... That was the crap goin on before nirvana.
Don't feed this moron. Nevermind went ****ing DIAMOND! That's Michael Jackson status. Fuck this tool.
So record sales determine whether or not an album is good? By your logic lady gaga, Britney Spears and Justin bieber must b the greatest artists ever!
I was referring to the huge success of nevermind you silly silly man. That album made it big and was the holy grail in so many young minds that the following records, although just as terrible, were pardoned. You know, cuz well, they made nevermind. We can let it slide...
****ing unfair...Oasis one of the greatest bands of all time with the greatest songwriter who ever lived (noel gallagher) aren't yet in this piss stain and this faggots who even i can't call music are introduced just for making horrible feedback noise and destroying guitars...shame, shame, shame...i don't wanna live in this world anymore
Oasis owes their entire existence to Nirvana. Noel said so himself.
nope.. he was influenced by beatles and some se pistols stuff
I hear no Nirvana in Oasis music...where did you get your info...?
Basically Noel didn't like what Nirvana were doing (angst, anger, sadness etc) so he decided to write stuff that was more uplifting. Basically if Nirvana weren't around Oasis wouldn't have been able to make it big.
Noel Gallagher told NME May 11, 2013 how this was inspired by a Nirvana B-side. "It was written in the middle of grunge," he explained, "and Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself And I Want To Die.' I was like, 'I'm not f---ing having that,' Kids don't need to hear that nonsense. Here was a guy who had everything and was miserable about it. We had f--- all, and I still thought getting up in the morning was the greatest f---ing ever."
"I genuinely think Kurt could of written Wonderwall...we're similar people I think, both left handed for one thing" Thats a quote from Mr Noel Gallagher himself, it was on a bbc doc a few years ago, with a little googling I'm sure you could find it. So, yes, they were an influence.
"just for making horrible feedback noise and destroying guitars..." If you hate Nirvana for those reasons, then you have obviously never seen or listened to the Sex Pistols.
"Vegeta, what does the scouter say about Kirkiscool's whining levels?!" "It's over 9000!"
You strike me as exactly the whiney, ignorant kind of person who would call Noel Gallagher the best songwriter ever.
The RnR hall of fame is in America. Oasis are pretty much irrelevant here in the states. I doubt they will ever get in.
have u seen the rules on how to be eligible first to become a nominee
    Sleaze Disease
Uhhh, no. IMO, both Oasis and Nirvana suck, but if I had to pick which one sucked more, it would be Oasis. To say Noel is the greatest songwriter to ever live is hilariously absurd. The only thing rock n' roll about Oasis were the fights.
yeah, im sorry (not sorry) but as much as i enjoy oasis, i would never say they are RnRHoF worthy. and if it werent for the Sex Pistols, Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets and of course the Beatles. I wouldnt say Nirvana was much of an "influence" as they were somewhat of a respected peer, although on the opposite end of the spectrum. And as far as Dave Grohls bands not being called music, all im going to say is youre a turd. how can you even justify that claim?
I feel like as the years go on there's gonna be more and more bitching and moaning every year as 90's band get inducted...really it's not that big of a deal. I've been there and the place is pitifully small and empty. Just let Nirvana have a few more minutes of glory...
I'm more surprised that The E Street Band isn't in yet. I'm not a huge fan, but what the hell? Anyway, congratulations to all inductees this year.
Yeah, Bruce Springsteen got in back in 99, the E Street is getting in because they're adding a new award for performers that were "out of the spotlight."
Why do they add anyone in a Rock n Roll hall of fame? Kurt should be in a Rock n Roll hall of blame - bad, sloppy guitar playing, lyrics about sex and drugs only. Nothing musical, just some powerchords. Grunge is one of the reasons why metal went wrong way. This guy doesn't deserve to be there. He even killed himself. What a jerk.
well, kurt killed himself because he was sick of the fame, of course they were about the music
Considering the bands that did not get in I would say Nirvana don't deserve this honor yet. Dio isn't in it yet for Christ's sake. This is disgraceful.
Let's say that aloud people - Hall and Oats is Rock n' Roll. Even Oats is going - Huh?
Now we need a poll asking who should sing on the night of their induction. Perhaps a different singer for each song?
Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Cat Stevens, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt all deserve it. nirvana does not. kiss could go either way. more of a gimmick than anything.
I can understand if you don't like Nirvana, but by what criteria would they not deserve to be in?
