Friday Fun: Worst Metal Album Covers?

Look at this gallery of awful album covers. Some are so bad that they're good, others are just bad, but all are funny in their own way. Vote for the worst one right here.

Ultimate Guitar

Album covers used to be the first thing a music fan could see when they walked into a shop.

It's a great way to make a first impression, and anyone who still trawls through record stores knows that sometimes a good cover is enough to convince you an album is good. It often works, too.

But some musicians have a bad instinct for visual art, and it can translate to some truly awful album covers.

On top of that, as the years go by and technology improves, old record covers can look even worse than they did in the first place.

Metal has several victims for bad album covers, and we've been digging through the archives to find some of the worst ever.

All we can say is this: please give our sanity back. Please!

Go ahead and browse this list of bad metal album covers, and vote for the worst one with the widget below.

Metal Skool is meant to be a joke.... It's Steel Panther before they were Steel Panther
Just because something's funny doesn't mean it's not awful.

just means its a good job done, and they should be happy if they win? No need for name calling
I don't know if it's my excitement for Halloween or my love of jack-o-lanterns, but that "Trick or Treat" cover is actually pretty awesome...
Idk what you guys are talking about, these are all terrific covers.
I came here expecting to see Megadeth's original Killing Is My Business album cover. But holy shit, these covers are absolutely horrendous.
Metal Skool = Steel Panther. Steel Panther = Parody Act Parody Act = Intentionally bad cover. Either way, I can't believe the first Pantera album a)isn't up there or b) isn't winning the poll by miles.
We are all thinking it, and I will say it... That Boned album cover is in fact awesome, not awful. Well played sirs.
The Pat Boone album is actually quite good. It surprised me considering how terrible the cover is.
Why isn't Pantera's first album cover on this list? It's as bad as Battleaxe's cover.
Dance of Death by Iron Maiden? Shoddy album cover! MC Pooh - Funky As I Wanna Be Herbie Mann - Push Push Richard And Willey - Funky Honkey, Nasty Nigger... Way worse album covers xD
Maiden's one wasn't embarrassing to the same degree as some of these ones were in concept. Their's was just badly put together.
20 dislikes for a man whose album covers were genuinely awful? SOME people need to learn the only thing left to do with MJ is to laugh at him. I agree
lmao i just tried to dislike my own comment cuz i think I just made a stupid comment that was not relevant at all as I just saw it was a reply to a previous comment, oh well at least I can own up to it. either way MJ covers sucked, especially History.
These are awesome covers! Boned Up the crack! that is Epic album cover haha. And Metal Skool rocks Steel Panther!
I've seen hundreds of deathgrind, goregrind, pornogrind, etc albums with far worse covers than any of those.

And that is why they didn't make the list, because they are grindcore and not metal.
Those styles of grindcore are more metal than hardcore, you know. They really should have the  smiley here.

Maybe you can get away with the deathgrind. But nothing else really comes close. Its just like nu metal, just because they use distorted guitars and are influenced by metal bands doesn't mean they are actually metal themselves.
You can't honestly tell me that Regurgitate or Dead Infection aren't metal bands. And anyway, even if it isn't metal, how come they can't be on this list, but a swing album by Pat Boone can be on it? That seems pretty silly to me.

Don't ask me, I didn't make the article. They may have an occasional metal riff, but the overall song structures aren't metal. Calling them metal would be like calling Tesla a blues band or Blind Guardian a classical band.
I think that Fastway cover is actually pretty cool. Nice artwork.
Me too! Even the album is rockin! How many of you guys remember the movie "Trick Or Treat" that its from? \m/
Is Fastway that band with one of the guys from Motorhead and the singer of Flogging Molly?
The amount of people saying "DID ANYONE SEE STEEL PANTHER" and then a few comments later "is that steel panther?" Is annoying as hell
metal skool is meant to be bad...manowar is awesome..its hilarious
Megadeth's original artwork cover for their first album is pretty horrible too...even Megad Dave Mustaine himself said it sucked! Also, Guns N Roses's 'Spaghetti Incident.' I don't know about other people's opnions but Cannibal Corpse and Cattle Decapitation have come up with some shockingly horrible covers too!
First of all, Fastway's "Trick Or Treat" album cover is actually damn awesome! I mean, look at it! It's evil, dark and menacing, it stands out too! Also, Metal Skool shouldn't really be there, it's actually Steel Panther before they were Steel Panther and the album art is a parody of Poison's "Look What The Cat Dragged In", you should be picking on that one instead.
Haha, that's great seeing Steel Panther on there as Metal Skool. Reminds me of "Look What the Cat Dragged In," which is probably equally as bad album cover-wise.
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a UG article before. That Manowar cover is awesome!
Since Manowar is Power Metal, they get a pass, refer to the rules: d=6
Yep, he's right: "#18. Your album cover should include at least one of the following: fire, steel, weird glowing magical items, irregularly muscular men, fists thrust into the air, weaponry, magic creatures (preferably dragons), or bright beams of light around somebody/something. "

Someone tell Raven that the underwear go inside the pants. Also, the article could have focused more on well-known bands like Poison and been just as bad.
yeah, the original Pantera glam covers aren't so good either.
Yeah, but at the very least Pantera themselves denounced those albums and their covers.
Despite the fact that their Glam days being far better than their dumbed-down Groove days. Don't expect much from rednecks, though.
    Face R1pper
He's right though. Projects in the Jungle and I Am the Night are so much better than anything Pantera did in the 90s.
And that's why Pantera is recognized for their glam albums, right?
    Face R1pper
Yes, by the majority of true metal fans they are. And by the majority of true metal fans they are ridiculed for their 90s poser albums.
ridiculed? most people i talk to about Pantera ridicule the glam albums. the only people who ridicule pantera's 90's stuff usually complain that theyre rednecks or they dont enjoy "groove metal." so, thats just like your opinion man.
ha I didn't find some of these terrible, more like simply cheesy as ****, but not bad, except for that Boned one goddamn
