New Study Claims That Drummers Are More Intelligent Than Everyone

Says Polymic who has compiled Harvard and Oxford papers.

According to a collection of studies, drummers are super smart, due to a variety of factors relating to being in the rhythm section.

The news comes courtesy of Polymic (via Gigwise), who have compiled a series of reports from Oxford and Harvard universities to name a few. What they found was that that dude at the back of the band isn't the head scratcher that you might think he is, in fact he is more likely to be the smartest of them all.

For example, researchers at Stockholm's Karolinska Institutet found that drummers who kept a tighter rhythm also scored better on a 60-question intelligence test. This is a reflection of better problem solving skills, which creates a positive impact on those around them.

If that wasn't enough, other studies added that rhythmic music actually makes people smarter. A University of Washington study showed better results from participants who undertook rhythmic light and sound therapy. Additionally research from the University of Texas tested the same process on children with ADD, finding that it not only had the same effect as ritalin, but their IQ's actually went up.

Going further than simple intelligence, Oxford University found that drummers produced a "natural high" when playing together, which heightened both pain and happiness thresholds. On top of this, at Harvard, they discovered that drummers who missed a beat were actually tapping into the rhythm of the earth, which moves in waves rather than like a clock.

"On top of this, at Harvard, they discovered that drummers who missed a beat were actually tapping into the rhythm of the earth, which moves in waves rather than like a clock." Alright, it all seemed sort of legitimate until that sentence. That statement makes no sense at all. Like, I know what all those words mean, but in that context, they make no sense. That's not what a wave is. The Earth has a rhythm? What does that mean? Define the Earth's rhythm. You really have to explain what that means because the Earth is a planet, not a piece of music. It does not have rhythm in the traditional sense, so you must mean it in some other way. You have to elaborate on that if you want to be taken seriously. How does one "tap into the rhythm of the Earth?" What does it mean to tap into the rhythm of the Earth? Exactly where is this study? I'd like to know how exactly they made those observations. They'd need an instrument which studied what natural rhythms the drummers were "tapping into," and have to have read it to say they were tapping into the Earth's (which still means nothing since none of these terms have been accurately defined). Basically, there's no way in ****ing hell these studies are peer-reviewed, if they even exist at all.
Bull thats like saying every guitarist gets laid
Fuck man, I play guitar, drums, and bass and I'm still single as usual.

That one was about drummers being smarter than other musicians. Now apparently they're smarter than literally everybody. Bravo UG.
Next week it'll be bassists...then singers...then groupies...then the dude at the Maiden concerts who plays Eddie...then rappers...I could go on....
"What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine? You only have to punch the information into the drum machine once." These jokes will be sorely missed...
they discovered that drummers who missed a beat were actually tapping into the rhythm of the earth, which moves in waves rather than like a clock. That's a bunch of hippie bullcrap.
With people like Marco Minneman and Mike Portnoy in the world I can definitely see this being accurate.
Im all up for studies and average polls etc. but let me throw my poll into the mix. I've been in 6 bands in my life so far and every single one has crumbled because the drummer is an ignorant *******... Yeah very intelligent people!
I'd say something witty but I got accused of spamming by the loserbot5000 moderator who apparently thinks scoring ten views from one of these posts is how you would gain an audience. No, it wasn't when I did Jordan from Dream Theater's last video and then signed a shit ton of autographs in Miami Beach when the Progressive Nation at Sea Tour ended that I was seeking an audience. You're right, it was when I was lying here, stoned, and thought I would post a funny link on a UG post that will get 1/1000th of the audience I get when I decided to get up off my lazy guitar playing and film making ass and work. What a bellend.
"This group of people is smarter than others" is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. I see the sense behind it but that does not imply that drummers are smarter because they're in the percussion area. Don't get me wrong, i realize drums are a HUGE part of the music but who's to say playing them makes you more intelligent?
