Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor recently took part in a Reddit AMA with the members his band How To Destroy Angels. After being provoked by a fan regarding the Nine Inch Nails return to a major label, Reznor shot back with a flaming response, basically telling the fan to "go f--k himself."
"Why did Trent announce a new NIN tour at the same time your new album is releasing if he is trying to not be a frontrunner of the band? Odd coincidence in my opinion.
As millionaires, why did you sign up with a record label to promote your new album? Especially when Trent has had a history of being screwed over by said labels and managers. If it's really about the music and getting it out to as many people as possible, why not release it all for free? I understand if you want to make money. It makes sense to want money for your work. However, I don't buy the "get it to as many people as possible" excuse for signing up with a label. Again, especially when Trent conveniently places a spotlight on his former cash cow a few days before your band releases this new album.
Good marketing, Gene Sim-, er, Trent Reznor. When can I get my NIN toothpaste?
EDIT: Also, this one is for Trent. How did you manage to get back into the thought process of performing live when you had your farewell tour 3.5 years ago? Must have been hard to get back into the groove," the participant posted.
The singer's reply was much shorter, yet equally effective.
"Sorry, the wifi on our yacht is having issues, we can't get your full question to load. Try sending me an email at email@example.com."
But despite the rude tone, some of the other discussion participants have found a valid question behind the insults and requested a "legitimate response." Band member Rob Sheridan has later returned to Reddit with a more thorough explanation.
"The original poster didn't deserve a legitimate response, but since this is apparently a question that some people have, let me chime in and shut it down... Why was NIN announced right at this time? The answer is we didn't want to announce NIN yet. We put it off as long as possible to give HTDA time to breathe before getting steamrolled by the NIN news."
"But when you book festival gigs, they have their own marketing rollout that is beyond our control and have specific times they need to announce their lineups. Even though the festivals don't happen until July and August, they happened to schedule their announcements right at the time we were releasing HTDA. So we had no choice but to make the NIN announcement."
Sheridian later ended his lengthy statement with a simple conclusion - "Winner = Trent. Loser = Anyone who is somehow managing to get butthurt over his reply."
Nine Inch Nails have recently announced their return to the music scene with a new lineup featuring Eric Avery of Jane's Addiction, Adrian Belew of King Crimson and Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis.
So what do you think about this one? Was Reznor right to rip the AMA participant like that or did he take things a bit too far? Post your thoughts in the comments section below.
