Fox has cancelled the American version of the "X Factor" after three seasons, Reuters is reporting. The programme was never able to replicate the success of "American Idol," and only mustered 6.2 million viewers for its season three finale, about half of its first season finale audience.

Show creator Simon Cowell is set to return to the UK version of the programme, which has also suffered declining ratings in recent years. It is hoped that Cowell's appearance might bolster the UK show’s success. The pop mogul has released the following statement:

"I've had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on 'The X Factor' and 'American Idol,'' Cowell said in a statement. "And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!)"

About damn time... it's crazy how much of an over-saturation there has been of those shows. It was time for one of them to go.

Return to the UK version Mr Cowell? Good thinking! And you can f**k that one up while you're on it too

Over saturation kills everything. The Voice, X-Factor (National) Idol, (Nation)'s Got Talent. There's to many of them and they're all so similar. Plus none of the winners have any staying power and disappear within five years usually.

The whole Idols and X-Factor thing was original yes but seriously I hope all these shows make their exit now, it's become quite tiresome.

To me it's just entertainment but my problem is they make it out to be something it's not, all in all it is glorified karaoke and nothing more. But the show and people act as if they are discovering the best and most talented musician in the world right now when at this point we know that isn't true seen as anyone who has been on the show pretty much disappears with 2 or 3 years. You can't judge how good an artist is purely from their singing talent.
