A video clip of pop star Lorde fronting a metal band at the age of 12 has emerged. The singer, who is now 17 and whose single "Royals" has been a huge international hit, is seen in the video playing songs by the Cult with a rock band called "Extreme" at her high school. They reportedly came third in the event. Lorde signed a $2.5 million publishing deal with Sony this week, being called a "once in a generation type artist" by the company's president. She's currently in her sixth week at the top of the Billboard chart, and remains the youngest female to top the chart in 25 years. Can you imagine Lorde singing with a real metal band? Does her fresh angle on pop impress you, or does it make you want to turn the radio off? Let us know what you think of this next-gen pop princess in the comments. Watch Lorde with her metal band "Extreme" here:

What I REALLY like about this vid is seeing young people jamming the classics in front of a large audience.

Don't get me wrong, I like new stuff as well. But if I see kids playing real rock, then I'm sure that one day they'll put their own twist on it and give us all something new worth listening to some day.

I'm a New Zealander and people down here are going mad about Lorde. It's obscene. You can't go half an hour without hearing Royals on the radio, which is a damn shame because I'm sick of it plus there is a great song she does called Bravado which gets no airplay. Lorde's badge as a singer/songwriter is not exactly true - she was picked up by a record label at 14 and tutored for this. Her songs are written and I believe produced by one of the musicians from Goodnight Nurse/Kids Of 88. According to a friend of mine who is in contact with him, Lorde 'contributes' with lyric writing. Exact wording. So I'm suspicious of her actual contribution to the whole process. The final nail in the coffin is that the live performances of hers I've seen have been sub-par. But hey, at least she's not Miley, right?

Talent? How so? The writing is horrendous. The 'music' behind her dull singing is practically irrelevant. One of the most boring and annoying songs of the year.

the fact there's so little music is what makes her talent stand out, she carries the song entirely with her voice only with drums for rhythm and occasional bass to define the key of the song. not to mention she at 16 wrote the lyrics which criticize her generations pop music and pop culture and glamour. What's more is that when i heard justin beiber at 16, I wasn't surprised to hear he was 16. When I heard she was 16, my mind was blown both by her voice and message. there's no corporate corruption in her (yet). much props.

I get what it's about, I don't really care. It's thrown together crap. Her voice is terrible, and borders on going out of tune the entire song. The simplicity of pop music today, which she is apparently taking issue with, is evident in her own poorly written song which could have been done by an 8 year old in 5 minutes without thinking. The rhyme scheme and melody are dribbled together, it's just all bad. If you think this is somehow pop's savior, you are naive. It's the equivalent of what hipster garbage has done to 'rock' music.

defending the song doesn't mean I think she's "pop music's savior", her talent and presence in pop music is refreshing, but i don't like pop music hence i almost never listen to the song. I think It's time you say "screw you guys" and go home.

Defending the message is fine, but I don't see where the talent comes in. I have checked out lyrics to some of her other songs and it seems she has very little, musically anyway.

Imagine what an 8 year old like yourself could write in 5 minutes if you were actually thinking!! let me know when your album comes out!! ill be sure to illegally download it, burn it to an entire stack of cd-r's and build a fire with them so i can smell the smoke you are blowing up your own ass

I wrote an album. It was much better than anything I've heard by Lorde. Good on you though for resorting to insulting me rather than making a coherent point.

Just simply insulting your logic. You and I both know an 8 year old could've never wrote that song, unless they were some sort of prodigy.

Meh. Ok I'll give you that. Regardless of age analogies however, it's still lyrically mind numbing. Aside from that, there is virtually nothing happening in relation to 'music' with that song. Listen to the 'instrumentals'. So my point is, musically the song is terrible because the music is virtually non-existent. In that case, her voice and lyrics need to carry it because it has nothing else. She fell short of that.

rmack has the logic here. Her live voice is surprisingly bad - she doesn't hit all her notes particularly well and she puts on this indie-trend speech defect/accent in which she doesn't actually pronounce her 'r's as 'r's, but more like a weird 'wrw' sound.

The song is talking about the current trends in pop music and how ridiculous they are. Far from irrelevent.
