6 string version of the guitar I also have the 12 string version. Mine were built at the end of the 1960s; and I have some more details from a guy I meant on the London Underground, under "Action" section. Standard acoustic design with the neck joining the body at the 15th fret. The neck is slightly wide and comfortable for those with above average hand sizes. It consists of a solid spruce body top. The quality of the guitar is shown by the use of mahogany on the neck. The fingerboard is the usual rosewood. Eko guitars are obvious by their dreadnought size. Tuning is easy on the guitar because they use Tune-O-Matics on their bridges.

In appearance there is nothing to grab your attention. The body is lacquered in a shade of dark orange brown. The headstock has the Eko logo which nowadays is retro looking. You can tell it was made at the end of the 1960s from it. It's not psychedelic but that restrained typographic design that appeared: clean, neat with a geometric shape.

Sound — 9
From a dreadnought guitar you would expect a big and deep sound, instead it has a treble harmonic and timbre which gives it a jangly and sparkling sound. The tone likewise emphasises upper harmonics without much lower tone so the formant of the guitar is highly pitched. Consequently Eko guitars have a brighter sound than most acoustics. I find it good for strumming styles. Type of music Eko acoustics are good for would be 1960s California psychedelic scene, the Who acoustic covers or folk music of Simon and Garfunkel.

Action, Fit & Finish — 9
As mentioned earlier I met a guy on the London Underground who had the same Eko Ranger 6. He suggested changing the action to raise the strings further from the bridge by adjusting the screws to improve the sound and reduce buzz that occur on the top strings in first to third position. The construction is very good on these guitars. They are finished with a stylish scratch plate that has curves and points. I haven't seen any flaws with these guitars and they are robust as my 6 string has been subjected to marquetry on the fretboard. Thankfully whoever did it made it look artistic. It has also suffered by being left to close to a fire but despite the cracked varnish it hasn't affected the sound.

Reliability & Durability — 10
Solidly built I've played these guitars live and they can take a pounding strumming without going out of tune unlike a number of other acoustics. The strings that come with the guitar are very robust to the point the at they are resistant to fret bending but a good work out for your fingers. Eko guitars were always aimed towards the budget market so its surprising that these Italian guitars were made with so much care and professionalism: completely reliable to play and durable enough to take knocks without being damaged.

Overall Impression — 9
Ranger 6 is an acoustic guitar best suited for soft rock e.g. some of the Lindsey Buckingham tracks in Fleetwood Mac 1960s California psychedelic scene like The Mamas & The Papas or if its your thing The Monkeys. It sounds great playing tracks like "Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel or their "I Am a Rock." As Pete Townsend of The Who favours Rickenbacker guitars with their jangly sound then the Ranger 6 is the perfect acoustic accompaniment as it shares with Rickenbacker their treble timbre sound. Adjust the action to raise the strings higher is the only thing this guitar often benefits from.

Bought mine in 1972 in a shop called Musicland in Liverpool, cost £50 and what a fantastic guitar it has been. Apart from new strings from time to time it has never needed any attention or adjustment and for an acoustic it has a super action particularly with an extra light set of strings. 10/10.
