The debut album from Brit Rockers A, released in 1997, 'How Ace Are Buildings' kick started 'A' as one of the best, yet underrated bands around. Many A fans may not have heard of this album, being their debut album it was nowhere near as popular as the likes of the Top 20 album 'Hi-Fi Serious' and the recent album 'Teen Dance Ordinance'. However, this is a still a gem and has standed the test of time, and even though the band may have changed over the years, this album shows their roots as the ace British 'shouty' rockers. This particular album appears to start badly, with the grainy, mellow sounds of 'Turn it Up', but this song was mearly an introduction to the following song, 'Foghorn' which is probably one of the finest A songs around, well surpassing it's closest rivals 'Nothing', 'Better off with Him' and 'If It Aint Broke, Fix it Anyway'. It is a song that will definately get you up and rocking without you knowing it, and if you dont then you do not know a good song when you hear it. The sound of the album is very unique, as all of their albums have been, but you can still see the A sheen on it, with the incredibly fun and completely unserious 'Cheeky Monkey', floor filling tune 'Sing-A-Long' and the purely rocking 'Five in the Morning'.

Lead singer Jason Perry has never been seen as one of the greatest singers of our time, probably because A as a band is not very well known, but there is no denying that he is one fantastic singer, not specifically because of an ability to sing note perfect, beautiful lyrics with meaning and emotion, but because you can hear his passion for the music in his voice and you also share the fun he is having delivering them, making the lyrics stand out along with the soaring guitars and drums. The lyrics themselves are just as fantastic, with some incredibly catchy lines. 'Cheeky Monkey' is one of those songs you'll hate the first time you hear it, thinking that Jason Perrys completely lost his voice whilst singing the chorus, but very soon you're hooked on it and its fun and catchy chorus. Once you realise that nearly none of these lyrics has the same seriousness of the album 'Teen Dance Ordinance', and you 'relax' with the lyrics you'll enjoy them to an incredible degree, unable to keep the smile of your face as you happily sing a long.
Overall Impression — 10
Another unique album from A, a far cry from any of the other albums, but if you liked the other albums, you're still gonna love this because this is where all those albums spawned from. You wont be able to stop singing along to 'Cheeky Monkey' and the aptly named 'Sing-A-Long' and you'll also be unable to keep your head from moshing up and down when 'Foghorn' starts assaulting your ears. Not a song on the album I would not recommend, and with so many stand out tracks on the album you'll be unable to take it out of your CD player for a long time. An excellant album showing of A's unbelievable talent at songwriting and performing purely fantastic songs. Highly recommended, get it now!
