Sound — 10
Sophomore is the first single from Scottish Christian Rock band Aieris and although it only has 4 tracks in total, almost everyone will be satisfied by at least one of the tracks. "Static" has a powerful mix of crunchy guitar and bass with a screaming solo towards the end to impress anyone who might be sitting thinking 'just another average band'. "Blind" also carries a rock feel to it, with strong vocals and equally strong guitar coming together with a backing of some very impressive beats from drummer Greame Sutherland. "One Of These Days" is the most talked about track on this CD, it has a beatifully crafted mix of sweet acoustic guitar and the amazing voice of lead singer Andy Dorrat. As far as influences to Aieris go, I would say that Third Day, Hoobastank and Switchfoot are the ones which come to mind. Where meaningful lyrics come together with great music and sound amazing!
Lyrics — 8
The lyrics, especially in "One Of These Days" are innovative and maningful, encouraging listeniers to look forward to what's ahead instead of kicking their own butts over their pasts. The lyrics fit perfectly with the music in all the songs, with the two more 'acoustic' tracks ("Better Still" and "One Of These Days") having encouraging lyrics which stick in your head and which you find yourself singing to yourself all day, and the two 'heavier' tracks ("Blind" and "Static") hitting you with Dorrat's powerful voice firing out words showing you where not to go long in life.
Overall Impression — 10
In conclusion I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes Rock music as a whole, especially if the listener is a christian (as the whole band are christians and the CD has some christian-type lyrics in it.) The most impressive song in my opinion is "Static", if you want to know why then just listen to the track and wait for the huge solo to kick in towards the end. The other 'must hear' song on the CD is "One Of These Days", it's encouraging and the music is awesome.
