Sound: "Back Through Time" is the 3rd album by the band Alestorm. As many will know, the band is based around pirate-themed lyrics and happy sing-along power metal. This album fits neatly into the image the band created for itself with its last two albums: piraty powermetal, with lyrics about booze and epic quests. No surprise, but surely a lot of fun! The songs all have a cheery vibe, a catchy chorus and a cool solo section. The last songs of the album is called "Death Throes Of The Terrorsquid", a long song about killing a squid. This is the only dark song on the album, it's a nice change from all the happy stuff, and it shows that they can do that kind of stuff as well, it is very alike with Leviathan from the previous album. // 7

Lyrics: The lyrics are exactly what you'd expect them to be about: quests and booze. However that may be, they are funny as hell, and easy to shout along with a bucket of ale in your fist. One song stands out lyrically: "Death Throes Of The Terrorsquid", and the singing in this songs involves some blackmetalish screams as well, a little surprise there! On the live setting a second keyboard player did those harsh vocals, on the album it's done by Ken Sorceron. Another song that I'd like to point out is "Scraping The Barrel", which is about the criticism the band received on their lyrical content. All in all is this a very amusing singalong/karaoke album. // 8

Overall Impression: This band proves itself to be an amazingly good amusement act, with some excellent playing skills. Writing easy stuff and still selling it to the public isn't the same as writing rubbish, and although many critics don't like to admit it, Alestorm does a good if not great job at this, which can also be noticed when one attends a concert or festival with them on the bill. Always a big cheery crowd at their stage. The thing I love about Alestorm is that you can feel like a child again, screaming "Arrr" and talking like a pirate, whilst enjoying the happy powermetal and a beer (or two). In case you're in doubt whether to buy this album or not: check out the songs "Rum" and "Back Through Time". Those songs are catchy and fun to listen to, and represent the album very well. // 8
