Allegaeon: Fragments Of Form And Function

Sound — 10
Allegaeon's sound is enveloped within fiery passion and relentless technicality. It seems to raise the bar for any new up and coming metal acts that want to make it big time. Allegaeon's would be classified under the Technical Melodic Death Metal label, but they avoid technicality for technicalities sake. Another thing they do well is avoiding having too much melody, as too much melody takes away from the overall heaviness. They find an excellent balance of enough technicality, melody, and heaviness to make any metal fan happy. The members of Allegaeon are all well-versed in each of their respective instruments, but its their song writing abilities and ability to really come together as a band that is constantly at the forefront of their music. With "Fragments Of Form And Function" Allegaeon seeks to ensure that they will eventually be at the forefront of the metal movement.

In most music these days it seems like the passion for lyric-writing is lost, but metal is one of the only genres that has maintained the passion throughout all of its sub-genres. Allegaeon seems to be one of the few bands that writes lyrics full of passion AND knowledge, as if Ezra researched his topics thoroughly before writing about them. The lyrics seem to fit well with the music, and Ezra's voice may not quite be at the level of some of metals standout vocalists like Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God), Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder), and Johnny Davy (Job For A Cowboy), but look for him in the future to be at the top of his field. I also get the feeling that the first three songs were planned lyrically as they seem to follow a timeline. "The Cleansing" (World Destruction) to "The Renewal" (Revival of the world) to "Across The Folded Line" (Which would take them back in time to before "The Cleansing" to right the wrongs that lead to that act). Lyrical standouts include "The Renewal", "Across The Folded Line", "The God Particle", and "Accelerated Evolution". Here are the first four lines of "Accelerated Evolution" so you get the idea: "Chromosomes X and Y, divide and multiply Constant revolving D.N.A. Adapting to stimuli through vibrations of nuclei Until humanity dies away".

Overall Impression — 10
I wouldn't compare Allegaeon to any other bands because they seem to be in a class of their own. I love the mixture of melodicism and technicality that is worked into their song writing. The most impressive songs are "The Cleansing", "The Renewal", "Across the Folded Line", "The God Particle", and "Accelerated Evolution". If this album was stolen I would get it again in a heartbeat, its just that good.
