Atreyu: Lead Sails Paper Anchor

Sound — 4
This CD is as mainstream as it gets. Say hello to the new Avenged Sevenfold. Atreyu has walked the same path and I hope you all kept your copies of "The Curse" and "Suicide Notes and Butterly Kisses" because the Atreyu we once knew is gone and those 2 CDs are they only way your gonna hear the Atreyu you know. This sound was a total let down. Pianos, Acoustic Guitars, etc. Their sound isnt even recognizable. Usually Alex screams and Dan sings. Well now they both sing and it sounds like crap and screaming is nowhere to be found. Basic rhythms that do nothing but make your foot tap are on this CD and it's nothing to "rock out" to. The first single "Becoming the Bull" (I'm sure almost everyone has heard this song) is probably the heaviest song on this album. And that's a joke. 3 or 4 songs are decent at best out of the 11 on this album.

Lyrics — 3
The lyrics have went downhill. Like I said their just mainstream now. Lyrics like "I'm dying tonight", etc are cliche and overused on this album. The combination of Alex's screaming and Dan's singing on previous records was unbeatable. I'm sure we've all heard "Right Side Of The Bed" And "The Crimson" Those are goods example of the screaming/singing mix and it sounded great. Alex no longer screams and that plays a big part in the crappiness of this CD.

Overall Impression — 4
I can't really compare this to any other albums or bands really. Maybe A7X. The best song on this album is definatly "Can't Happen Here" even though the guitar playing is mediocre. there's not too much screaming at all on this album but 90% of the albums screaming is on this song. There are some guitar riffs, solos, etc and some screaming and singing that reminds me off old Atreyu, but hardly any. But the parts that do bring back their old sound make me want to rock out and appreciate this album but the very few decent/good songs don't make up for the rest. Sorry to say. All I have to say is go back to Victory Records Atreyu. Do not buy this if your expecting "The Curse" or Deathgrip. I wouldn't buy this again If I lost it. I wouldn't even download it. I'll just stick with The Curse. Thank you very much. RIP Atreyu.

Absolutely, the first thing I thought when I saw this was "Looks kinda like Black Sails..."

Personally i always liked Atreyu but i would barely call myself a fan, I loved the music but the singer used to kind of put me off ( a little too much screaming IMO) so when i heard they changed directions i grabbed the new album and i personally love it. Hard-core fans will call it selling out until they are blue in the face but for the rest of us this is the Atreyu album we've been waiting for

FINALLY someone agrees with me on breakdowns. These bands cant write more than 4 riffs per album so the breakdowns "breakdown" the monotony. Atreyu's new CD is actually really good instrumentally and the lack of screaming is awesome. Honestly how many of you can relate to metalcore. its good that they changed their sound because its a lot better now. I don't see too much of an 80's influence. well that song Honor has 80's drums written all over it. Once their "fanbase" moves on because the genre is dead then atreyu will have NO fans. NO ONE listens to disco anymore it evolved into something else. Would you guys honestly go back in time and tell led zeppelin to not record led zep 4, physical graffiti and etc. cause each of those had an evolution of sound. How about black sabbath or hendrix go back and tell them not to play what they want and see where shit goes.

It's good to see a band taking a risk. Of course, they shouldn't have done it so drastically. They already had some cool harmonies and whammy bits, and if they had gradually brought in more of that then maybe their entire fan base wouldn't think they "sold out".

I believe they have adopted a dying genre (the whole nu-metal vocals accompanied by A7X-type guitars) in order to replace the genre that they found themselves alone in (we scene kids call it "fashioncore" or simply, "faggotcore.") Sure, they have skill. Playing fast and well doesn't mean your band sounds anything less than entirely boring (see: Dream Theater.)

um yeah guys. atreyu HAS changed their sound. you may not like it as atreyu playing, but you may like it as music. i mean honestly. its not bad. its different. so stop whining for atreyu to go back to their old sound. they have 3 other cds, listen to those for their old sound. and listen to this one for the new and still good sound.

So much music today sounds like it came straight out of '87 anyway.
Yeah maybe, but the bands today have hardly a quarter of the talent bands did in the 80's, a lot of those bands were unique where as today the pop and emo scenes are bigger because more and more talentless bands are riding off of the popularity, its not even about music anymore

Heh Having a listen to some of the new songs now They sound pretty good actually, good on them for trying something different

Lol @ stupid fans. "RADIO FRIENDLY SONGS LOL! DEY SOLD OUT!" ffs, they made this album because they wanted to make this kind of music. I think it's ridiculous people here think just because they stop screaming it means they sold out and are "the new Avenged Sevenfold". You people need to grow up. I personally liked most of the songs.

omg....you guys are so metal heads...yes i absolutely LOVED their first 2 albums...but im not just a metal junkie...i love rock and post hardcore screamo and etc... and im deffinately sure that this album is pretty much awsome...there are screams to be found...and i love this album to death...especial Lead Sails(and A Paper Anchor)...all the tracks are awsome...and I'm planning on learning all the rythms to it...and i definately and able to "rock out" to most of the tracks... i personally love the change, and perhaps they will, next album(if and when) they might go back to their metalcore roots, i pretty much love these guys for going more mainstream...not completely, but more mainstream, and personally i think this album is a hit. I hope that others can learn to appreciate changes that they made, and i love their screaming/singing mixes of "right side of the bed" and i love the down rigth screaming in "her portrait in black" but i also like soft stuff...like acustic music and i love how they are able, after being a complete metalcore with overdrive/distorted guitars and screaming, to incorperate piano and acustic, it shows that they're really thinking about the music...not how loud they can get...i think i'll be able to get almost all teh people i know that love rock but hate metalcore to love this album...so if you hate it...thats fine...atreyu is going to get a lot more attention from the rock people...like me

atreyu is just another band that just had to decide somewhere down the road: whats more important....screaming into a mic and selling cds for 5 bucks out of the trunk of your car to a couple guys wearing girl pants...or making a decent living in the music industry for the price of somewhat audible music that i daresay involves talent. whether you admit it or not, rock stars have families to feed and bills to pay too

i just heard becoming the bull sure its different from their older stuff but it isnt that bad. Kinda has a papa roach - getting away with murder + better/more riffs and leads sorta vibe to it.
    =Thunderbird=

I don't know the new album but I can't imagine that its vocals went so downhill... in my opinion they did not sound great at their other albums like the curse either - if you get used to them they sounded ok but sure not GREAT - if there's one thing which isn't good about atreyu then it's the vocal screaming parts which sometimes upset me because actually I like atreyu, the guitar work of this band awesome. But except for the song her portrait in black - when I think about the songs I know, which are not all songs of them - their vocals never kicked ass but were ok, so if they once had a 9 or 8 at the rating then a 3 is really ridiculous. Except the lyrics were such primitive that a 3 year old boy could write them. I really can't believe they became so bad.

I really like the new album, the music is great, the lyrics/singing could be better. most people just have a problem with bands changing their sound, get used to it guys, its nots the first time and its definatley not the last.
    StraightHate
Not a fan of this band in general although some of the stuff is good. After three listens to this effort it seems like a mainstream sellout to me. This album sounds like it was produced by Metallica killer Bob Rock, IMO of course.

i don't like the sound of this....their old metalcore sound was sweet...but i unno
    boyan89
oh and to matrix claw the bassist has always been providing back up screams

it doesnt deserve a 5... you guys are so mean approach it with an open mind.. bands change face the fact it deserves a 9

The genre is ****ing awesome but once in a while a band needs to switch it up and try something new. Southern metal is the new trend this days which isnt bad. but ****ing Atreyu rocks.. Keep it up boys.. Oh and AX7 new album will be the same way as Atreyu's
NEVER say that again. I heard a7X's new song. it is NOTHING like Atreyu's new album. NOTHING ALIKE. Foo'.

Ya so what if they changed their Metalcore ways to become a bit more hard rock/metal. Im a HUGE FAN!!!! of these guys, the guitars are amazing Brandon and Alex and sing like crazy, and alot of their riffs are very melodic, 2 Thumbs WAY Up on this album

Lol. Anyway, time for me to say my opinion. I thought that this album was okay, although I prefer the album a deathgrip on yesterday. That was a good album, had a bit of change from their old style, whilst keeping old elements that people liked and stuff. This new one... Well, it's a bit weird, I like it still, but songs like "Blow", although catchy as hell, get a bit annoying. Meh. Anyway, checked.
    [faint]
the album aint as bad as everyone claims it is. did prefer "the curse" days though. it's funny to see that genres of metal are like fashion, what was kool now isnt, like numetal and now metalcore.

I'd like to see a review that focuses on THIS album and doesn't mention their previous releases or compare the band to how they used to be.

Its always the same story with you people. Oh it doesnt sound the same.. You guys should be glad they didnt just copy and past from previous albums. Atreyu, didnt sell out to become more mainstream. Metalcore is finally becoming a dying genre... The Screamo thing is really getting old... every band does it these days. ALthough i have to admit, some bands do it right... but for those bands who chose to break free from the metalcore label, i support them 100%.
    MasterofOrion
Hell yeah! I Bought this album Yesterday, f'in A. I love the new sound, its so refreshing. I always knew Atreyu was better than Metalcore. The Vocals, the guitar solos.. its all really great.
    PMAC01
Hmmm. The 80's type stuff (Scorpions, Twisted Sister, etc.) promotes more advanced guitar playing instead of todays arpeggiated and chord based riffs. Also, you can only scream so much. Do any of you people commenting actually have the skill to play anything near this or anything that came out of the older, better rock (try DragonForce you guitar critic wannabes)? I hope so..... I hope more bands make more music like this.
    bassbizzle
atreyu is my favortie band, along with the devil wears prada. i'v only heard becoming the bull off the album, and from the looks of the reviews and the coments i'm kinda scared to listen to this album, i gess i can only hope for the best =(

So by your "logic", every album would be a 9?

a complete letdown. i didnt even bother to buy it, just downloaded a torrent for the album. hes right - lose it is the best song on the album, and sounds most like the Atreyu of old, however it still misses the mark. im not against bands changing their sound, lets face it, most bands do after every album. But what irritates me is when bands 'sell-out' their original fans and completely change the music that made them famous. Then they become 'radio friendly' so they can appeal to more fans therefore selling more cds and getting more money. This makes me sick. What happened to the good days when music was about making good music, not just selling cd's and downloads?? i dont know who to blame more, Atreyu themselves, or the selfish and greedy major record companies desparate for profits. Indeed, RIP Atreyu, we miss you.

Atreyu will never become as they were. Raw and powerful on suicide notes and butterfly kisses. I know they're trying to make a name for themselves but this is just a slap in the face to their oldest and truest fans. Every single time I've seen them live Alex has said "you're the ones that keep us real, we'll try return the favor someday". Thanks for this Alex, Brandon, Dan, Marc and Travis(I
