Austrian Death Machine: A Very Brutal Christmas

Sound — 8
Austrian Death Machine(ADM) is the side project of Lambesis (As I Lay Dying) based around the cinematic exploits of a certain Californian governor, we call Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tim takes all of the instruments for the band(guitar, vocals, bass, and drums) and shows the chops that prove he can do more than just sing (or scream depending how you look at it). Following the release of ADM's debut Total Brutal, Tim decided to spread a little holiday joy by releasing the EP A Very Brutal Christmas, containing two unreleased songs as well as the single from Total Brutal, Get To The Choppa.

01.Jingle Bells: well simply put it's a metal version of Jingle Bells. Now all vagueness aside, what we have here is a fine slab of just plain fun metal. The music is nothing jaw dropping but that's just fine because the true appeal to this song are the lyrics.
02.Get To The Choppa: just plain simple fast thrash. Again no revolutionary playing, but Jason Suceof lays a pretty sick solo on the track.
03.Hell Bent For Leather: a Judas Priest cover. It stays pretty close to the original composition but is still a good fun song and features the most prominent bass in the mix of any of the three songs.

The vocals are mostly screamed but impersonations of Arnold are spliced in throughout the songs. "Arnold" himself adds in spoken word parts on occasion. All of ADM's lyrics revolve around Arnold and his rather bad ass antics. However with two of the three songs being covers those lyrics are not as present. Jingle Bells for the most part follows the traditional lyrics and Arnold sneaking in the occasional line about "smashing vertebrae". On another note this song has the worlds greatest lyrics for a breakdown, "it's Christmas, let's party". Get To The Choppa doesn't feature any Arnold voice overs, and that's not exactly a bad thing. The lyrics simply are about Arnold escaping to a chopper(choppa). Hell Bent For Leather, was of course was written by Rob Halford and the lyrics are simple, yet fit the overall theme of ADM's lyrics quite well. The screaming and impressions trade of lines which actually comes across as unique and enjoyable. There is nothing wrong with Lambesis's vocals but the Arnold impressions do leave something to be desired but overall don't ruin the songs.

Overall Impression — 8
Overall, this is an enjoyable holiday novelty and certainly better then usual Christmas music plaguing radio airwaves from the day after Thanksgiving until December 26th. This EP doesn't break any ground but that's not why you enjoy it. Jingle Bells is probably the strongest track but none of the songs are bad. If this album was stolen I would probably buy another copy if for nothing, the great album cover.

Thanks for the review. I'll probably get a copy of the EP. Just for future reference, Lambesis does not impersonate the Ah'nuld; as it says on wikipedia.org:
Destroy the Runner vocalist, Chad Ackerman, voices all of the Schwarzenegger impersonations.
I didn't even know who these guys were but I bought Total Brutal. They are the greatest/funniest.
