Avenged Sevenfold: City of Evil

Sound — 6
The sound of this album is comparable to bands such as Trivium. Good guitar work, melodic rythm and some excellent lead guitar work. The sound is quite over-produced, as with so many albums, which I think takes away it's edge. A lot of the aggression and anger is lost. Either way, it's good to see heavy music being brought back into the mainstream.

Lyrics — 5
The lyrics don't really stand out, but so what? This is heavy metal! It's not meant to be poignant and romantic. It's mant to rock, which this album does!

Overall Impression — 7
Okay, so perhaps not an entirely unique and original sound, but these guys, along with bands like Trivium, System Of A Down and Killswitch Engage are bringing metal music back into the mainstream, and for thatalone, this album deserves credit. While it is not particularly deep or innovative, it's bands like these that are keeping metal alive (let's face it. Without any metal whatsoever in the mainstream, it would die) and above all, an enjoyable listen.
