Ben Konstantinovic: Rain Before The Storm

Sound — 8
Rain Before The Storm is former InMe man Ben Konstantinovic's debut solo EP on which he strays from the beaten path and into the unknown world of lap tapping. Although short at four songs in length, the EP shows that Ben is just as capable with the guitar on his lap as he is with the strap over his shoulder. The EP contains two tracks done on an acoustic guitar with the other two being played on electric. Opener and title track "Rain Before the Storm is well crafted, relentless and beautiful all at the same time, calling on slick tapped runs. "Thoughts of You, the first of the electrics, drops the pace a touch and although it is probably the weakest track here, it doesn't disgrace itself in the slightest. "The Journey" is as epic in terms of soundscapes as the title suggests, with percussive tapping being a theme amongst more open tuning assisted tapping. It's the closer "Requiem" though that shines the brightest. Although played on a guitar, it's feasible that it could be played on a piano or with orchestral support, such is the vast and powerful nature of it. All in all the EP is well rounded and showcases a wide variety of skills in the Laptapping/Airtapping genre.

The guitar work does all the talking.

Overall Impression — 8
"Rain Before The Storm" is incredibly competent in the genre. This is even more incredible since Ben is a relative novice compared to his contemporaries. However this collection of material shows that he can mix it with the best. McKee and Mongrain better watch out, this young pretender will certainly keep them on their toes.

a truly beautiful album, "thought of you" is particularly good I find for those nice summer days when the sun is shining and the world just seems happy. I would love to be able to play like Ben as it is just such a fantastic style
