Blood Red Shoes: Box Of Secrets

Sound — 9
Blood Red Shoes displays a minimalistic yet refreshing spin to what some may refer as a floundering English Alternative Rock/Indie scene. Steven Ansell(Percussion-Vocals) and Laura-Mary Carter(Guitar-Vocals) make up this dynamic duo. Their debut album "Box of Secrets" melds the eccentricity of some of their Alt Rock predecessors yet keeps intact a beautiful combination of harmony and rawness.

Lyrics — 9
The lyrics in "Box of Secrets" are honest and clearly based on experiences and observations from an everyday patron. Whether reflecting on relationships woes (I Wish I was Someone Better)Dealing with loss (Say Something Say Anything) or being a spastic person who can't concentrate (ADHD) Blood Red Shoes lyrics are straight forward and cut with pure genuine conviction. Both Ansell and Carter harmonize and share vocal duties and do a great job being a counter balance to each of their original and powerful vocal styles.

Overall Impression — 9
Blood Red Shoes bring a great mix of energy and power without compromising on melody. The album does not include any bass guitar but with Carter's chunky and raw tone, it doesn't feel that way. "Box of Secrets" songs all sound as if there is a common theme in mind and BRS' writing style is driven home from track 1 to track 11; Simple and catchy. If you don't like track 1 then you probably won't like track 11. The dynamic vocals and stylings have a reminiscent Fugazi twinge with the high and low mix of Ansell and Carter. Interesting tempo progressions and changes are also to be noted. If this album was stolen I would definitely go repurchase it!
