Sound — 9
To properly understand the direction that Brightblack Morning Light come from it is necessary to understand their background. It is made primarily of the two founding members Nathan 'Nabob' Shineywater and Rachel 'Rabob' Hughes, who during the summer live in a tent in the forests of Alabama (and a communal cabin in winter). While this sounds strange, it is the bands undertaking to break free of the constraints of modern music, and to create something new, and they have. Maybe in excess, early copies of the album came with glasses with prisms in that not only blurred the users vision but made them see rainbows. While this all may sound overly pretentious, take all this out of context and their self titled album is a pure pleasure to listen to. The music they create draws from so many genres to create a sound entirely their own. All the songs mainly follow a distinct pattern, a fuzzed out bass starts a grove, which the guitar joins, and soon the drums which taps out triplets. Other instruments are often added, especially horns. The main feature though is the singing, which will be looked at below. The songs don't have choruses, verses, instead its slow, lush, languid music that meanders without going anywhere, then draws to a close. The skill of the musicians however carriues the music fowards by itself. Brightblack Morning Light, described as simply as possible, is a mix of the electronica of Spaceman 3, voodoo, funk and 60's Psychedelia. While it may sound a strange combination, the music flows effortlessly despite the abstract concept behind it. In other words it's a sound that can only be understood after it has been listened to.
Lyrics — 8
Nathan Shineywater's (Nabob's) singing remains rather similar throughout the album. It is often unintelligible vocals and lyrics drowned in reverb and wah-wah. However it perfectly matches the sound the music creates, and the voice is used as an instrument rather than just normally singing. What lyrics are intelligible are musings on nature, philosophy, the self, and abstract ideas about the world. While this may yet again sound pretentious, the vocals aid the sound perfectly, and the meaning of them is unimportant.
Overall Impression — 9
Brightblack Morning Light are unique compared to all other modern artists nowdays. The most impressive songs are 'Everybody Daylight' and 'Black Feather Wishes Rise' which are the best songs to start with if you are interested in the band. While they may not appeal to everyone, it is worth it just to listen to them to hear something completely orignial. It is great to listen to if you want to relax, however the music may wear off some people after repeated listens. If it were stolen, or lost I would definately buy it again. Brightblack Morning Light, have created something very original, and worth listening to if you get the chance.
