Sound — 10
The music in this album is superb. It was the only album Steely Dan ever made for a working ensemble and so the range is filled by less instruments making for an album that really shows the depth of all the instruments especially the synthesizer/clavical or whatever they're using. The important thing is that this album is filled with some of the most amazing and amazingly cool riffs you've ever heard. Solos are also plentiful and each works perfectly with the song. No clashing here. Also, each song is distinctly different and the album as a whole is consice with no filler at all. Sound could be better only if sound couldn't be better.
Lyrics — 10
Lyrics are, well, if you look in the album booklet this comes with you will find that most lyrics were written at the last minute. This isn't obvious at all. The whole album is concerned with the groove and the music and the singer's voice works perfect with it. The lyrics themselves also work well with some being extremely simplistic and direct ("Bodhisattva") while others are obscure stories ("Gold Teeth", "Show Biz Kids"). It's all very good and unobtrusive, perfect for the music going on.
Overall Impression — 10
This album is a must own for anyone who enjoys jazz, classic rock, swing, anything really, there's so much to find on this album. If this were stolen or lost I'd buy it in a heart beat, so much to loose. Brilliant. 'nuff said.
