Sound: When most people think of Dave Matthews, they think of lengthy hippy jam sessions of upbeat songs. But listeners will find very little of that on Matthews' solo debut, Some Devil. On this record, Dave branched away from his sound with DMB and tried to make this seperate from any other of his recordings. The tone of this album is full of death and darkness but is has its jolly moments. // 8

Lyrics: Like I mentioned before, the lyrics of the album are full of death and hopelessness. But it shows off Dave's talent for songwriting and his growth as a musician. Dave brilliantly uses words to desribe the thoughts of a car wreck victim ("So Damn Lucky") and kill off 3 people in a matter of four minutes ("Gravedigger"). The lyrics and singing is the crowning achievement of Some Devil. // 10

Overall Impression: Some Devil is a departure for Matthews and results as nothing short of magic. The album is a complete 180 turn from anything he's done with The Dave Matthews Band and it shows he's only getting better and better. The superior track on the record has to be "Some Devil" which shows that just with an elecrtic guitar, he can pull off possibly his most raw, heartfelt song. Some devil is a masterpiece, and is a must-own. // 10
