Dwarves: Blood Guts And Pussy

Sound — 8
Being offensive is always a fun perk of being in a punk band, and the Dwarves looked poised to make a career of it in 1990, when this hardcore classic hit the shelves. A major improvement over the sound of their debut, BG&P showed the Dwarves to be furiously capable riff writers, lyricists, and nudists. With more hooks than a pirate convention, Blood, Guts, and Pussy blasts 12 songs by you in just over 13 minutes, and each one is a killer. While your mom may not appreciate song titles like "F--k You Up and Get High", "Let's F--k" or "Flesh Tantrum", the sleazy juvenile in you will. The garage band aesthetic that would dominate later albums is barely noticeable here. Instead, you get screaming hardcore played fast, out of control, and just plain mean. Oh yeah- it's also hilarious. Dwarves may have gotten more slick on later releases, but they never recaptured the power that this album barely contains. If you like the sound of punk, you'll love the sound of this.

Blag Dahlia is at his most vicious on this album. Screaming as much as singing, because he wants you to know how much he hates you personally. Also, I believe that he may want to have sex with someone and ingest illegal substances from time to time, as well. This is Blags punker voice, before he turned into a maniacal crooner. He's a great lyricist, even if the topics presented here don't exactly require advanced degrees to get the point across. It's always seemed that he doesn't really want anyone to know how capable he is, lest someone ask him to write songs for SmashMouth. Which is, of course, exactly what happened when he put his pants on that one time.

Overall Impression — 8
Dwarves would get a lot happier and cleaner on later releases, mining pop and garage rock veins, but never unleashed hardcore along the lines of "Skin Poppin' Slut" or "Insect Whore" again. Not worse, just different. Listening to Blood, Guts, & Pussy is like watching a car wreck- it comes out of nowhere, is fascinating and violent, and is over before you know what happened. As George Bush said, "Everybody don't like something, but nobody don't like the Dwarves."
