Fight Like Apes: Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion

Sound — 9
Fight Like Apes are best described as electro pop with good punk sensibility. The band is comprised of two synth players, a bassist and a drummer. While this isn't a particularly unique arrangement, I haven't quite heard a band like them. The drums and bass would not be out of place in a punk band or pop punk like Green Day. However the synth adds an engaging poppiness. Possibly a bit like The Killers or Depeche Mode on Es or coke. Overall, there is great energy and catchiness which is expertly captured on this CD.

Lyrics — 8
Lead vocals are provided by Maykay, a woman, and backing and gang vocals are provided by the other guys in the band. The lyrical content is comical. Lyrics like "you're like kentucky fried chicken without the taste" and the epic "shit shit shit bang bang" are not to be taken seriously however this band are not to be taken seriously either. They are a band for laughs rather than deep inciteful looks into life. Vocals are somewhat coarse, stemming from the whole punk ethic however it only adds to the energy of the music

Overall Impression — 9
While Fight Like Apes have what some may call everyday electro pop influences, they have a sound unlike any around. They are undeniably fresh sounding despite the music being simple. Most of the songs on the album are gems particularly "Something Global", "Jake Summers", "Tie Me Up With Jackets", "Do You Karate" and "Snore Bore Whore". I know I named half the album! I know I haven't done justice to the pop genius that is Fight Like Apes, however they are the kind of band that one either loves or hates. So check 'em out
