Finntroll: Midnattens Widunder

So, after you have checked the covers of CD, with trolls and swedish words and songs like "bastuvisan" you most likely wonder how does this Finnish "black metal" sound like. Let's find out. The intro song is most likely most epic intro song to any metal album. At least "black metal" album. It's hard to explain but it's.. it's trollish melody with keyboards. After 2 minutes of the melody drums hit in in BOOM, guitars hit long notes with keyboards playing the intro melody. First song is pretty folk stylish already, but then comes the second song; Rivfader and it begins with finnish Humppa with drums. My god. After 2 killer songs we get to the Vtteanda wich is much more heavier song. As this is their first album it doesn't have very good sound quality and that's why this song sounds a bit bad. Rest of the album is just great feast of folk melodies and humppa and the outro song Svampfest is again keyboard-only song. You can hear they're not guitar heroes, there's no guitar solos in the album but other than that it's quite good album.

The lyrics are very interesting. This is a concept album, telling a story about trolls waking up in the Svartberg (Black Mountain, songs Intro and Svartberg), then starting a battle against christians (Vtteanda), then a little story about Aamund and Kettil who get beated by trolls (Bastuvisan), then the end of the battle (Blodnatt and Midnattens Widunder) and finally the victory (Segersng). Guitarist of the band told in an interview that the theme "Trolls vs. Christians" is based on their opinion that all religions should be banned wich is pretty obvious as they started as a black metal band. The singer, Katla, has a very weird voice. At least for me it sounded weird, but I don't really listen to black metal, so you may have heard even more weird voices. The swedish language fits perfectly troll theme and music.

Overall Impression — 9
After all it's a good album, maybe even better than Jaktens Tid, and much better than their new ones. I like the concept theme and also the wild humppa style and also Katla as a vocalist was perfect to this music. Sound quality could have been better, but it's ok. Trolling is art. Absolutely a must buy to everyone who's interested in folk metal.
