Sound: On this record Fu Manchu are joined by former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork, and his influence can be clearly heard. This record sounds like a more mainstream Welcome To Sky Valley, with it's pounding riffs and sun-drenched atmosphere. Unlike Kyuss, however, Fu Manchu aren't afraid to throw in a good chorus or whip out the wah pedal for some brief solos. These are generally played quieter than the rhythm guitar, which adds weight to the riff but may not be to everybody's taste. Brant Bjork plays in his usual style (for the lucky few who know what that is) over-using the cymbals perhaps but pounding out some great beats along the way (think John Bohnam here). Overall there's a very '70s sound and feel but with '90s quality and precision. There's not a missed note, and the rhythm is so tight it can't be faulted. // 8

Lyrics: The lyrics are, this being Fu Manchu, primarily about aliens, illegal car racesor some combination of the two, with some girls thrown in for good measure. Scott Hill sounds like a more mature John Garcia, and his lyrics seem to be there to compliment the music, but not to distract from it. // 6

Overall Impression: This record is really easy to listen to - put it on for that instant summery feel (even in rainy ol' England) and it's not too intrusive so as to stop you having a conversation! As such, it's fairly hard to pick out individual tracks, but I'm gonna name Anodizer and Evil Eye as my favourites. It's a chilled out record to have good times to. If it were stolen or whatever, I'd probably buy a different Fu record and expect a similar sound. // 8
