George Harrison: George Harrison

Sound — 8
Warm, loving, rich and melodic acoustic based catchy pop/folk album recorded in a happy, contented and fertile period of Harrison's career. He had re-married, his first and only son was born and his feeling of contentment and happiness is expressed on his self titled effort. George produced this album in a simple yet well crafted manner with a breezy melodic feel and Eric Clapton plays on a couple of songs. Keyboards and overdubs typical of the era were tastefully restrained here, their minimal use on this album enhances the atmospheric of Harrison's attractive melodies which are at an all time high here. This is a very underrated album, certainly in his top 5.

His lyrics are about love and hapiness. There is some trademark humour. Some of the songs were dedicated to loved ones. Romantic songs have equally as romantic music to complement. His singing is impressive, particularly when he uses his higher range falsetto. His skills as a vocalist were always improving.

Overall Impression — 9
This is one of his most consistent, melodic and brilliant albums of his career. It is a personal record that is happy and uplifting but in a way that can inspire the listener and the songs have universal messages of love and hope. Among the more impressive songs are the delightful "Blow Away" the catchy "Love Comes To Everyone" the inspirational "Faster" and "If You Believe" the romantic latin feel of "Dark Sweet Lady" or the tropical delight "Soft Touch." Every song is good, there is no clunker to be found on this album. It has a cohesive sound which is really relaxing, it is a mood album in an uplifting and loving sense. I would buy this album if I lost it, as if anyone would be setting out to steal an underrated Harrison record, perhaps now I have enlightened you all, don't let this tempt you.
