Sound — 10
Hoobastank's new album has taken a drastic new direction in sound, No longer are they making only heart-felt ballads but also epic alternative rock songs. The new album boosts in creativity and originality with Doug's vocals better than ever and the whole band stepping up to show their true talent. The overall sound of the record is a mixture of old Hoobastank, Lostprophets (older stuff) and Darling Thieves. The album also has a great range of songs with ballads like "Slow Down" and edgy rock songs like "This Is Gonna Hurt" and "The Fallen". This is by far the best Hoobastank album ever created.
Lyrics — 10
Doug's songwriting appears of a darker nature this album with "No Destination" boosting lyrics such as - the stars will be my company tonight - and "The Fallen" - be careful what you wish for cause your wishes may not be what they seem. The lyrics show a new level of maturity for Hoobastank and how much they have all grown as song writers over the year. Moreover, the lyrics flow perfectly with the new slightly heavier sound of the band creatiing a truly memorable record and one of the best of 2012.
Overall Impression — 10
If Hoobastank keep up this new sound they are sure to make plenty more fans in the near future. They will also gain respect of many more people being one of the few bands this year not to have sold out and make a shit album, yes I'm talking to you Muse. The album is extremely hard to pick favorites from but the best songs would have to be "No Win Situation", "This Is Gonna Hurt", "No Destination", "The Fallen" and "You Before Me". This could possibly be a very exciting new beginning for Hoobastank and the future of alternative rock.
