Sound: This is The Stooges last album. It meant the end for them but the beginning of Iggy Pop. The album is typical Detroit rock. Not bluesy, not southern, not metal, just rock. James Williamson plays guitar, replacing Ron Asheton on guitar, and he's very freeform and wild with it. The Asheton brothes Scott (drums) and Ron (now on bass) pound out crazy rhythms. Scott Asheton is a very forceful and unique drummer. And Iggy Pop does his wildest screaming and moaning. The original 1973 mix by "The Chameleon" David Bowie was cotton eared. Sounded like you were listening to a stereo in a closed cardboard box. Iggy's 1997 remix lives up to the name much more. It's got a crisp sound, but it's far from clean. Everything is distorted and shredded sounding. Many of the band members themselves prefer the original, but what I've heard its not as good as the remix. It's the rawest you could find. (for those hoping for the original mixes, check out the compilation Rough Power). // 8

Lyrics: The lyrics are typical Iggy Pop fare. Sex, drugs and rock & roll. It fits with the music no doubt. It's pretty good. As far is lyrics about getting down and dirty go, they're some of the best you can find. // 6

Overall Impression: Well, it's The Stooges at their best no doubt. James Williamson is a great guitarist and Iggy is in top crazy form. It's been cited as one of rock's all time best. Tracks like "Gimme Danger," "Search And Destroy," and "Death Trip" are straight up hard rock masterpieces. For the best in the Detroit rock scene, and the best of The Stooge, this is the one to get. // 10
