Sound: Immortal's third album Battles in the North stands as one of the greatest black metal albums. The cold and grim sound of both the genre and the band is presented on this album, the guitars are brutally fast the drums as well, the bass with exception of "Cursed Realms Of The Winterdemons" is inaudible. The intricate weave of the sound on this album makes it a band and genre classic. Battles in the North is the last pure black metal album by Immortal, later material features more thrash and death elements. // 8

Lyrics: All lyrics were written by Demonaz with Blashyrkh as the main lyrical reference along with winter, ice, the grim tone of the lyrics goes well with the instruments creating a great listening experience. Abbath's vocals further enhance the vibe. The average listener might find the lyrics not interesting and boring in some parts. // 9

Overall Impression: The album suffer from the very thing that gives it its great sound, lo-fi. In some parts the guitars get covered in the mix and the vibe suffers due to this. "Cursed Realms Of The Winterdemons", "Blashyrkh", "Moonrise Fields Of Sorrow" and "Grim and Frostbitten Kingdom" are my favorites, the songs vary in length there are a couple four minute ones, a couple two minute ones, the rest are abut tree minutes. // 8
