Sound — 6
Very unlike all Immortal albums Blizzard Beasts combines classic Immortal sound with death metal. Casual listeners and die hard Blackers will dismiss the album due to this heretical death sound. But I like it, it is very dark and monolith in nature and unlike the albums before this one the vocals are more "upfront" in the mix and are not buried in the back. Very grimmfull, and short feel, as all songs except Mountains of Might, are around two and a half to three minutes in length.

This is the last album to feature the classic line up of Demonaz on guitars and Abbath on bass and vocals, due to Demonaz's tendinitis Abbath took on the guitars for all albums after Blizzards Beasts.

Lyrics — 10
As always great lyrics, written by Demonaz and performed by Abbath. They for the most part concern ice, winter, but don't be discouraged by this as they are not boring, but very interesting. The monolith vocals + lyrics + the remaining blackness pull this album trough.

Overall Impression — 6
I love the musical aspect, Immortal are musicians first and metalheads later so experimenting-wise it is o.k. Ultimately it cannot be compared to any other album due to the death element. The thrashy element on later releases is better by a mile.

My favorites include "Blizzard Beasts" "Mountains of Might" "Battlefields" greats songs which follow the formula Immortal + death.

Sounds like a winning combination. Never understood the dislike of death metal by black metal.

death metal(swedish scene at least)is/was very commercial while norwegian black scene was not and never tried to be commercial,so in the black point of view death was pop while black was truly underground love the album
